H had outpatient knee surgery in January. He's been feeling worse and worse in the last several weeks.
Finally got in to see the Dr on Monday. We were concerned it might be an infection. Dr didn't think it was but drew blood and fluid from the joint. Told us he thought H might have a virus...we didn't think so.
Dr office calls H Tuesday afternoon. It's a gram negative infection. Wanted H in surgery that night. Couldn't get the surgery room scheduled, so will be late this afternoon or early evening likely.
Very worried.
Best outcome=they clean out joint, do intravenous antibiotics for 6-8 weeks, H stays on oral antibiotics for rest of his life.
Bad outcome=they replace the joint or amputate the leg and still same course of antibiotics
Wish I didn't know how to Google, but mortality rate is up to 38% within 1 year of diagnosis. It's a very resistant bacteria.
2 kids still in HS--a junior & a senior.
Please add us to your prayers.
I know this community is awesome. Thank you

Thank you all for your wonderful support!
Good news for now.
Surgery went "routinely." Cleaned out the joint and started H on IV antibiotics. The specific bacteria is called pseudomonas.
The lab will determine (likely in a few days) if the antibiotic works on his strain of bacteria.
If so, 6-8 weeks of intravenous antibiotics and then a low dose of oral antibiotics for life.
If not, it gets more complicated, but likely not life threatening.
This a.m., he is in good spirits.
We will be laying other M concerns aside for a bit to get through this.
Thank you for your prayers and positive thoughts!
