How else is poor/pore pronounced? I'm thinking the SC in your name is the cause of my confusion, lol.

Hmmm. Most people around here pronounce poor to rhyme with “sure”. That’s the closest I can come to describing it. When I am thinking about it, that’s how I pronounce it. But when I’m with my kin or not paying attention, it comes out as “pore”. It cracks JM up when I slip into Southern instead of my “educated” language.

My pronunciation of “frog” is also a source of amusement to him. Comes out as “frawg” unless I am really thinking about it and take the Southern out.

This thread is awesome. I was trying to remember sayings from Daddy. If he had to go to more than one stop while driving he’d say he went “all over hell and half of Georgia.” I’ve shared many times here about his view on sympathy. “You need some sympathy? It’s in the dictionary between shit and syphilis.” Oh, and a mess of any sort, he’d say it looked like the place was hit by a blivet. What’s a blivet, you might ask? It’s ten lbs of shit in a five lb bag. 😂😂😂

If we wanted to know where something was, his answer was, "Up in Maggie's room behind the clock!" smile

That's a distorted British saying. "Up in Annie's room behind the clock" is used for don't ask or I don't know. Dates to WWI

Deena, my daddy used to tell me almost the same thing, except mine was a hummingbird butt. 😂😂😂

He also would say that someone didn’t know shit from Shinola.

A stupid person— “He wouldn’t be able to pour pee out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heel.”

I had a patient once who would always answer, “Kickin’ but not high, flapping but can’t fly” if asked how she was doing.

Does my mom count as an 'elder'? (Please no one tell her I asked that or she'd whoop my butt....)

One of hers that annoyed the shit out of me when I was younger, but that I love very muchly now - "If you had time to do it over again, you had time to do it right the first time."

From my grandmother - "If we all hung our problems on a line we would each run for our own every time."
Also from her, when she got tongue-tied trying to say 'salt and pepper shakers' she called them "shocka-pocka-shockas" and my whole family now calls them nothing else.

From my grandfather, who was the bestest, grumpiest, orneriest old man evah - "Obedience is overrated."

And one of my favorite words came from my paternal grandfather - geschnarfled, use it all the time.

So many cute sayings! My paternal grandmother had a three word saying for when people get into an argument. I think it must have come from some book or movie? She would say something along the lines of "and they went on with all this kind of 'Who struck John.' Never made a bit of sense to us!

A couple more I have thought of.

"If you knew how little people thought about you, you wouldn't be concerned about what they think".

A funny one: "Couldn't find their own ass with both hands and a flashlight"

She was also very German, didn't speak English until she started school, and she still cursed in German, so my sister and still use those words.

My favorite saying from my mom is "even a blind hawg will find an acorn sometimes." Or maybe this one, for someone who doesn't like you - "she wouldn't give me air if I was in a jug." The first time I heard her say that, I had to full stop the conversation and ask - Mom, WHY would you be in a jug???? laugh

My grandfather used to say "if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Christmas." He also used to say he could "whistle and fart and push a cart," which my brother would repeat and make my dad mad.

My dad used to say, when we kids were complaining of a minor hurt, "call the doctor, call the nurse, [insert name] is getting worse," but now he claims not to remember that.

I love these. Another one came to mind. My dad would say this about fashion trends he didn’t agree with, especially my 90’s teen generation ones.

" It looks like they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down"

This was about the fashion trends he did not like, not the actual look of people. He would never put down how somebody naturally looked. It was the choices made along that way that he didn’t always like.
