Regional foodies, what do you miss?

I grew up in New England but moved away almost 30 years ago. Recently I went home, and now man oh man, I'm missing the foods that only they know how to cook properly. Your average roadside clam shack in Massachusetts does seafood as well as (often better than) the best seafood restaurants in my current city. Going back was just a reminder of how wide the gap is!

Tonight, I want clam chowder and properly fried scallops. If you're a transplant from your home territory, what foods do you miss?

Jelly donuts with powdered sugar. I've been able to get good NY style pizza here, and I've had good seafood too, but jelly donuts are glazed, and that's just not right.

Iím with you @BraveSirRobin. New Englander here living in FL. Seafood...absolutely, but I live on the coast so I get a good fix of it. Different selections of course and I do agree, nothing like NE ďChowdaĒ! But Italian is my favorite. Give me a mom and pop Northend Italian restaurant and Mikeís cannolis from Boston!😍😍 Or a great Italian place in NYC.

I miss fried clams and my mom's clam chowder, which is probably the best clam chowder ever.

We have the 'recipe', but she has no idea what amounts of stuff she puts into her chowder.

I used to miss iced coffee. When I first came to Chicago, servers thought I meant pouring their regular coffee over ice. The word has spread, hoever, and most coffee places I've been in have brewed iced coffee available.

And - for the real New Englanders - I miss cabinets. Hmm...I wonder if they still call 'em by that name.

I was just at an ice cream stand in Rhode Island that offered cabinets! That was a new one on me -- I never saw them as a kid in the western Boston 'burbs.

Where I grew up, even a little further north, there was this burger joint called Deluxe (only had a single golden arch, lol). They had decent burgers, chicken on a bun, but the best fresh-made fries with an amazing spiced gravy (for the chicken and fries) that you just can't beat. It's funny - I've met other transports from my hometown and it's definitely something we all miss. I'll have to do another google search to see if there's a recipe for that anywhere now.

wh5: total and complete envy here (especially on a Friday night). There's a lot of things I miss about that fair City, but Buddy's is one I can't seem to shake.

I recently ordered a gen-u-ine steel pan so I can attempt some kind of approximation. Next quest is finding brick cheese. I've been met with looks of confusion around here thus far.

Toast a slice for me when you make it across the street!

Green chile. We moved to New Mexico when I was 7 and Iíve lived here ever since. When we go on vacation, the first stop when we cross the state line is a restaurant with good green chile.

This is a weird one because itís a fast food chain, but whenever I go back to So Cal I have to make a trip to Rubioís for fish tacos. Weíll be back in November and it will be a must have while we are there. Iím never disappointed.

Iíve also been hard pressed to find good Mexican food in Texas. Tex-Mex is not the same!

Although I never lived there, my parents were born and raised there and I've visited a million times so I feel I can add Pasties from the U.P. of Michigan.

And, from my XWH's hometown in Iowa, Maid-Rite sandwiches and pork tenderloin sandwiches.

I grew up in the St. Louis area, and Unhinged, you can have my share of that Provel cheese on a cracker-thin crust. (shudder)

And you can have the Gooey Butter cake, too.

I'll get by with the toasted ravioli from St. Louis and pizza from my college town. Papa Del's or Garcia's from Urbana-Champaign. I haven't had any of that pizza for over 10 years, and I miss it.

Fortunately, there's an Italian restaurant not far from me, run by a St. Louis native. She has toasted ravioli on the menu.
