Anyone planning anything special for Monday’s event? After checking our weather forecast, which says it’ll be in the low 60s and sunny, I pulled the trigger and ordered some eclipse sunglasses online tonight. They’ll be here Friday.
We’re supposed to be in the 85-90% coverage range, and I realize there’s a big difference between that and a total eclipse, but I have no desire to fight traffic to get to an area with 100%.

We can go with this one! No worries.

We were in the middle of totality for the 2017 eclipse. It was a really cool experience as staff and residents all convened in the back parking lot to watch it together.
I’m highly amused, as I was then, with all of the memes and posts about keeping pets inside or putting eye protection on them. As if animals haven’t been experiencing eclipses for however long you believe the earth has existed. Somehow it seems they’ve managed to avoid blinding themselves.

My area is supposed to have a great view. Of course I waited too late to find glasses. Is there a safe way to view without the glasses?

Jeaniegirl, I just ordered mine last night on Amazon and they’ll be here Friday, so you could give it a try. I’ll bet you’d be able to get some that way. Remember Amazon delivers on the weekends.

I live north of Dallas, which is supposed to be absolutely inundated with eclipse viewers on Monday, to the point where my county issued a warning to avoid I-35 at all costs, fill up our gas tanks before the visitors arrive, and expect cell phone outages.
My house is baaaaarely inside the path of totality. Like, barely. 200 yards behind my house is outside the boundary line. I'm supposed to be able to see about 25 seconds of totality. My daughter, whose house is not inside the path, is taking her kids out of school that day and coming to my house, then we're taking the back roads about five miles southeast. Doing that gains us about a minute and a half more of totality viewing.
I looked it up today, and this area hasn't seen a total eclipse since 1878. We won't see another one anywhere in the US until 2044, and we won't see one near DFW for another 300 years.
Thankfully, I ordered glasses a month ago, and I have those ready to go. I just hope it doesn't rain!
Jeanie, any chance you have access to a welding mask? They work great for viewing the eclipse! (That's what I did last time.)

I do tax returns for people through the IRS's and AARP foundation's Tax-aide program. On Wednesdays. And Mondays. I'll be at a desk in a library either preparing or reviewing returns. If I can, I'll watch some website's stream on my phone.

A note about eclipse glasses: I ordered mine a year ago from a supplier that was vetted by the American Astronomical Society. Up until recently, there was no proof that counterfeit glasses that reproduced these companies' logos (but were not actually manufactured by them) were unsafe. Now there's evidence that some "ISO approved" sunglasses being supplied out of China are anything but. Google "American Astronomical Society Warns of Counterfeit & Fake Eclipse Glasses" for advice to determine if you have the real deal. If you are in any doubt, don't use them to view the eclipse.
One of my kids lives in the path of totality, so we'll be going up to visit. Very exciting!

I was in path of totality previously it was very cool. The funniest thing was my chickens got very confused. Some started to head to the coop some just froze. When it was over my rooster started like it was 6 am.
I am not traveling to see this one although only an hour south of me is in the path. We did hang onto our glasses from the last one.
I saw a giant display of the glasses last week at our local Lowes.

Number4, I don't order anything online. I got hacked big time last year from an order and it took forever to get money back. I had my daughter order something for me on Amazon for a Christmas gift. LOST merchandise (they say) and I still don't have a refund. Maybe I can find some approved glasses at a store. I just do not trust online shopping but I know millions of others do.

Oh Jeanne that sucks. I honestly don't know how I'd survive without online shopping.
I really upped its use during Covid. I love it.
Maybe try a Lowes near you.

We're in the 99% range. Really not interested in traveling the 30 minutes or so northwest to get into the 100% range. I just don't have any interest in dealing with the crowds for a 5-minute event. Might stop outside for the physics department presentation on campus during it.

Google ways to make a simple pinhole camera to allow you to view the eclipse safely. I’ve seen the cheap glasses at both Staples and Loews.
Also, I think you can view from under a tree- the shadows will show you the eclipse.
Have fun! I’m in partial only zone, so none for me this year, but I am envious of you all on the path!

Shadows are SO COOL during an eclipse! We had a partial here a few months ago and it was neat seeing the semi-circles in the shadows.

My home is very near the path of totality. 2.5 hours of effect and 3.5 minutes totality. BUT I will be hundreds of miles from there!! Would love to experience it, especially "Bailey's Beads"? Oh, well..... I'm sure it will be on TV or online. Safer for the eyes, I'll tell myself.
Sisoon, many places in the path are closing for at least the totality part of this eclipse so workers can experience it. Government offices near my home will close because of the spectator inundation and traffic jams expected. (So they say. ) They are warning people not to just pull off the road on highways if they are not able to do anything else.
I did the pinhole for a partial one time when my kids were little. Last one, I was at a place where we all used their welding masks. I'm still seeing that government offices and libraries in some places will give out free glasses?
Happy viewing everyone.

I saw a sign at a store this past weekend that said they'll be closed for half an hour during totality. I love that. Several school districts are also closing.
My grandson's school is allowing the 4th and 5th graders to view the eclipse with glasses, but the younger kids will be watching inside on TV. I guess they don't trust them to keep their glasses on. Parents for all grades are welcome to come to school and view the eclipse with their kids. I think that's cool.

Yes, I've heard there are counterfeit glasses on the market. The ones I ordered say 'Made in USA' by a company called American Paper Optics (NASA-approved), but I will be using Google camera/lens to capture a picture of them when they arrive, and make sure they're not counterfeit.
But yes, people should be aware of scams.

This on approved glasses from a nearby observatory that they will supply for ticketed attendees:
glasses meeting the ISO 12312-2 safety standard and made in the USA. The vendor is eclipse2024.org, a company that is listed on the "safe suppliers" list of the American Astronomical Society.
I'm sure they are not the only place to find them.

Well.... I screwed up my order. I didn't look closely enough, and thought I was ordering two pairs of eclipse glasses, and if I'd looked more closely (I was so honed in on whether they were knock-offs or not), I would have seen that each unit was actually a pack of six glasses, so I'm now sitting here with 12 pairs! I wish I lived closer to some of you so I could pass them along.
