I am not liking those numbers. What's the risk factor of severe infection with one vaccine dose 14 days after getting it?

From what I recall from the original studies a majority of the protection kicks in within a week of each shot. Like 70-80% efficiency after 7 days after the first and 80-90 after seven days after the 2nd. For kids I think the risk factor is still low but maybe rising. In my state as of yesterday, 31,019 people ages 0-19 (smallest breakdown in the easiest to find data) have tested positive since the beginning of the year. Of those 93 were hospitalized. I'd have to think at least half of those were older teens. Probably much more if omnicron holds true to previous strains. Confounding factors though, hospitalization tends to lag positive tests, Lack of ability to test due to shortages, shortage of hospital beds leading some not so severe cases to be sent home where they would have been hospitalized a month ago. Same age group at earlier peaks Sept 2021 52k positive 473 hospitalizations, Dec 2021 63k positive 446 hospitalizations.

I checked our regions dashboard to see if they have it broken down further. They did have % tests broken down by 0-4, 5-17, 17-24 which is currently 30, 39, 37 the older group seems to have peaked. 20,30,40s are all in the high 30% to 40% range. 50s in the low 30s The 60+ age groups are all in the 20s. That's also the group with the highest vax & vax boosted rate.

This is were having a simple y/n per data point on vax status would be extremely useful.

I read through all of the new protocols and rules for the return to school.

The big concern i have heard from parents and others is that the instructions for the antigen tests are written like a medical text. The regular person might not perform the rest correctly.

The protocol now is anyone with symptoms takes 2 tests (at home), 24 hours apart, that are negative before they can return to school.

Im still sorta unclear if they need to still isolate for five days from start of symptoms and test at the end of the 5 days or not.

Currently we are under a special weather statement. Looks like we might get a significant amount of snow tonight, into tomorrow. Good chance buses will be cancelled.

My daughter feels much better after one week. She has been told since she 'feels better' - she is to return to school tomorrow even if she still tests positive. We have 27,000 plus NEW covid cases since Saturday. Okay then -- guess it doesn't matter if she infects others, right? Since the feeling is 'everyone is going to get it.'

Jeaniegirl

Im glad your daughter feels better.

The protocols are so strict here i can see schools being closed just for lack of staff. 5 day min. Isolation.

I am still so confused about what they consider "symptoms".

They are listed twice in the SAME DOCUMENT from the school.

The online check list says if you have any symptom no school, that includes a runny nose...and EVERYONE IN THE HOUSEHOLD must isolate.

Further down is a link to the government protocols and screening tools. There it says if you have symptom A,B,C and D AND/OR 2 or more of the following (runny nose, headache etc) isolate but if you just have a runny nose or just have a headache you are ok not to isolate.

Today was a snow day for most, if not all of Southern Ontario. Haven't had a snowfall like this in a long time.

And about resistance.

On my community FB page, parents were up in arms about kids doing remote or online learning today...

The kids just spent 2 weeks remote learning, why such an uproar about today, a snow day?

Everyone spoke to when they were a kid and how SNOW days are supposed to mean the kids get to go outside and play In the Snow.

One person posted how back in their day the buses just plowed through the snow lol

Well most of my kids work was just posted to be done or not. Teachers didnt seem stressed over it. No scheduled meets for my twins at least, dd not happy about that and ds had only reading group.

My kids did NOT want to go play in the snow. Checking on and feeding the goats and pigs was enough outside time for them, its not snow man making snow either.

I grew up a "town" student. Lived a block away. Walked there. Snow days were awesome. The entire art studio, computer labs and biology/Chem labs all to myself! grin

The headmaster actually challenged the students to debate whether the schools should still have school days going forward earlier this year. They can pivot online and have to keep that ability in case a class is quarantined.

We lived just under the cut off for busing (1.25 miles). Schools closed only 2 days for the blizzards of 77-78 because the school board knew some students only meals were at school. With my parents if school was open we were there so we walked there every day they were open. With only single digit kids there, most classes turned out to be glorified recesses. Had a blast.

Dragn, when I got a Covid test this morning, they gave me two sheets of policy and instructions should I test positive. At the bottom of the guidelines there is a statement that says ...

These policies do not apply to schools.

All of my kids came home with rapid Antigen Tests to be performed ONLY if they have symptoms...as stated below:

When to Use a Take-home Rapid Antigen Screening Kit:

For individuals choosing to participate in this testing option, they must display symptoms commonly associated with COVID-19. As outlined in the updated guidance

(I removed the link here)

Fever and/or chills; OR

Cough; OR

Shortness of breath; OR

Decrease or loss of taste or smell; OR

Two or more of:

runny nose/nasal congestion

headache

extreme fatigue

sore throat

muscle aches/joint pain

gastrointestinal symptoms (i.e. vomiting or diarrhea)

So if anyone has JUST a runny nose or JUST a headache you're good....???

I hope thats the case cuz all the kids had a runny nose after coming in from the cold. I was snot city after doing the driveway again.. laugh

Without tipping my hand too much- I work in an elementary school in Ontario.

Today, I was told to supervise my class from the hallway because so many children were calling out sick.

Maybe the kids don't know any better- but they're not getting quality education right now even if they're in person.

I haven't seen a report that confirms Meatloaf's cause of death or his vaccination status for that matter. He was outspoken about the vaccine mandates, but you can be anti-mandates without being against the vaccine in general. He was reportedly sick with Covid a few days before he passed so people are assuming his cause of death without it being confirmed or officially reported.

my family just got over Covid. im pretty sure it was omni com. my son brought it home from school. The covid numbers in my county are critical. Some parent sent there kid to school sick knowing full well that numbers are super high. student was sent home tested positive that day. it was a friday. my son had symptoms sunday and wasnt able to get tested until tuesday. i tried having him wear a mask and quarantine away from the rest of the house until he was tested, but hes cognitively disabled and doesnt understand. He was positive. my bf and myself woke up the next day with symptoms and my daughter the next day. and my 3 month old the next. lucky it only lasted a few days. i am vaccinated and yhe rest of the family is not. i was just as sick as my bf. im not getting my son vaccinated until i can see real data on the vax on child with his issues. my daughter im not getting vaxed because i haven seen enough data on her age range. my bf wont get it due to his mental health. and my baby is to young. im pissed i got it the way i did. my kids show any upper respiratory issues i keep them home and get them tested. Just to be sure they dont have it. i wasnt able to wear a mask at work. i have a sensativity to the mask. so i had a plastic sheld. Very little protection. but it was something. i work in the medical field. all my co workers around me got it
but me. i was pg when covid numbers for delta were super high and never got it. my coworker whom i work closely with got it and i was around her all day before she tested positive. never got it then thank god! i dont care whether or not people get vaccinated. But i know my family wont due to not enough data about long term affects of the vax on certain mental health issues or certain age groups.

After four days of waiting, my Covid test came back negative from the state health department. I'm not sure it's accurate because I have all the symptoms of Omicron. So I'm still staying away from everyone. After 6 days I am finally starting to feel better.
