Irritable about haircut

I know it's a first world problem, but I'm irritated by the haircut I got today. My salon closed permanently in the pandemic, so when my vaccination kicked in fully, I found a new one that was very highly reviewed online. It had been over a year since my hair was even trimmed, so it was very long. "Too long," sniffed the stylist, who is also the salon owner. I said that it definitely needed some layers put into it, and to have the ends cleaned up, but that I didn't want to lose a lot of length. A few times, while he was cutting, he said,"And you don't want the layers shorter than this, right?" No. Long layers, said I. "I don't want short hair," said I.

I think you can see where this is going.

It's not necessarily a bad haircut, but it is NOT what I asked for. It's a good 3" shorter than the pictures I showed him, which were of me just after my last haircut. My hair was halfway down my back this morning, and now the very bottom layer just barely touches my shoulders. It's not like I gave him unrealistic inspiration photos of something my hair won't do. He just thought it should be short, so he cut it short. In the words of Shelby in "Steel Magnolias," it looks like a brown football helmet.

It'll grow back, though it will probably be the end of the summer before it's the length I wanted it to be today. I'm just really annoyed by stylists who think their vision is more important than mine. And it's stupid of him, too, because I need a new salon, and I stuck with the last one for over a decade. My mom needs one, too. Two regular customers out the window to suit his personal tastes.

Meh.

Ugh, I’m sorry. Had a very similar experience in my mid-20s and I seriously cried in my car after. She cut off six inches of hair! I hadn’t had it cut in three years!

I hope you find a better fit in the future. Too long, yeah, whatever, dude.

Raises hand too

Hair was touching my waist

Asked for stylist to even ends no more than 1 inch.

You know the rest...ends up shoulder length because?

Men get the same treatment from stylists. Two days ago I got a haircut. As always, I held up my thumb and forefinger and said, "No longer than this and layer up the ends to that length."

Did I get that? No. I ended up, as always, with the hair on top twice as long as specified. She asked if it was right. I told her to try again,

It is closer now.

I HATE it when the stylist doesn't effing listen. I've only had 1 cut since about 12/19 (had to last minute cancel my appt in Feb, and then Covid hit) so its WAY too long - like to my waist - and the ends look like I've been living in a cave... which may not be too far off the mark given lockdown. I'm donating this round and expect it will be super short for awhile.

I dunno what a doc would say, but I really do believe that the vitamin D helps the hair grow, so taking a supplement and spending some time in the spring sunshine may help get it to grow out.

I don't know why stylists do that. I usually have them show me with their fingers how much they're going to cut and watch very carefully that first cut.

I typically pay $180 for a cut and color and I am DONE. I did the color myself last week and it turned out great.

They make some very good extensions, if you're wanting more length while yours grows out. I wear them at least weekly to make mine look fuller.

(raises hand too)

The last time I got a "professional" haircut was in August 2011. While H shopped nearby, I stepped into a branch salon of a well-known chain, requested about 3" to be trimmed. got tsked tsked over my self-trimmed bangs.....walked out with a Susan Powter haircut. I'm talking short...very, very, very short layers!!!

I was absolutely appalled....H didn't care for it, either.

By November it had grown out enough to have some semblance of style for a nephew's wedding.

I let it grow long over the years (mid-back) and H would trim my hair every few months.

It is now just above my shoulders. It is easier to manage at this length.

And I still trim my own bangs.

Never. Again. At. A. Salon.!!!!

I went in to a strip mall chain for a quick cut. I usually went to a fancy salon 2x a year as a treat, and just threw it in a pony tail most of the time, but for some reason I wanted a haircut and had the time and...

Got a horrible cut! I mean, I could have just taken scissors and cut layers while my eyes were closed. I went to the nice salon and my usual stylist laughed that I deserved it for not coming to him first and we made jokes about how bad it was.. it took my usual guy an hour to fix but when he did it looks fantastic .

I still laugh about the jokes he made about my hair while I was in his chair!!

I just realized where I've seen this haircut before. I'm 25 years too late for "The Rachel."

Hair is back touching my waist. Scared to try again. I think stylists do not think older woman should have longer hair or maybe 😈😈 possessed scissors is a thing?

oh no! 😩 I’m so sorry!!!! Bad haircuts are ugh. I hope your able to find a better stylist that you can stick with soon. I had “the Rachel” when I was younger and I think I remember crying, totally not something I felt I pulled off well, although some people really did! Rachel included of course.
