DS3 got meningitis..... he's doing better now but was really sick for about 2 weeks.

WH had a heart attack Monday. He's very thin, but eats a lot of fatty foods. Anyway, he had 2 stents put in and there is a third artery with some blockage but they didn't add a stent to that one.

I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop now..... sad sad sad sad sad sad

Oh Zen, I didn’t see this.

I’m so sorry. It’s so hard to deal with things when they come at you in multiples. Seems like you don’t have time to recover from one before the next one hits. 😢

Prayers that your son and your WH will be well soon.

((((Zen))))
My H had a heart attack 2 weeks after his 40th, and had a stent placed, widowmaker lesion. He has been fine since. He is now 54. No problems.
His brother who is my age (51) just had 3 stents placed over 2 different times, he too is thin, but eats like a 13yo w/ no parental guidance, and smokes.

Genetics play a role, but healthy eating, and exercise, and making smart choices can definitely minimize complications going forward.

I hope your son is doing well, and feeling better. May take a while before he is at 100%.

And the hits keep on coming......

WH got released from the hospital today, so that's good, but DS3 has been having numbness in one arm that goes from his hand up to his shoulder. He had to go to doc to get the asthma meds anyway so asked the doc about it - I told him to also make sure that whoever examined him knows that he is still recovering from meningitis and to see if it could be related to that.

So he went from one doc at urgent care appt to get the asthma prescription then had to go to the bigger nearby city to visit the hand hospital. And he called me and said he had an 'episode' there, where when they told him to stand he couldn’t really walk. Not only was his arm numb but his leg was as well (same side). They think this is from the meningitis and that he might have a problem with a vein that is filled up which touched on the nerves. Or something like that (he's 24, so not a medical expert in French).....

Now they are going to have to do further checkups at the main hospital in our state. I am very worried that he is not taking this seriously enough. They told him he could go to stay at the hospital tonight but he didn't want to do that. Then they said well ok, but if ANYTHING happens go to the hospital IMMEDIATELY by ambulance.

I think he doesn't want to go now because it's Friday night, he wants to eat (it's ~10pm here) and charge his phone.

I've had a talk with him to try to emphasize the seriousness of the situation. The hospital will make appts for further tests for next week, assuming he doesn't go to emergency over the weekend.

And since he's doing his military service now, all his medical care is paid (yippee!!).

Thanks for all the support everyone, I truly appreciate it.

Good Lord!!!

"When it rains, it pours."

You mean you have faced / are facing all these things in another language???

Well that adds a whole other dimension to the whole situation!

I don’t know how you do that. Besides English, and about 100 words in Spanish, sign language is my only other language.

Are you fluent in French? If not, how can you be sure you are understanding the full impact /nuances of what is happening?

Damn…this sucks. So sorry. 😔

Zen,
I know thats scary stuff with your son but please understand that his brain is inflamed and sore just like your lungs would be if you had a pneumonia.
He is going to need to rest and heal and follow what is similar to heal from a concussion.

tn - he actually did have a concussion before this, his army mates ended up accidentally dropping him on his head.....

so the update now is that (a) he's NOT having a stroke (yippee!!) and (b) they think he has vein/artery expanding and compressing the nerve(s), giving him the numbness. He's also having back spasms now. We're staying right on top of this in case new stuff happens.

So he's supposed to have some kind of liquid med+physio Mon-Sat for 2-3 weeks, then same 2-3 times per week. I just can't believe all this shit is happening.

Also tn, thank you so much for the reassurance. I'm also more convinced now that he is taking his med condition more seriously.

He has also been recently diagnosed with a kind of asthma (not sure which), and based on his labs he has a weakened immune system. But I think this has been going on for some time now, when he was 15 or 16 he got pertussis (even though completely vaxxed) and that took a long time to recover (in Chinese it's called the 90 day cough, and that was about right) and now he gets everything that's going around.

His sporting condition is very good though, his resting heart rate is around 42 and he performs well in sprint-med distance running events, as well as football (soccer), basketball, etc and he is also muscular, does wrestling. He took up the wrestling after he was raped (about 5 years ago, you might remember that).

Anyway......

Thank you ALL for all your support, it means so much to me.

That low resting heart rate in a physically fit young male is completely normal.
Many runners can drift into the 30s when in deep sleep. Freaks us nurses out a bit but that's just an efficient well oiled machine a t work.

The asthma can take time and a lot of trial and error to get right and whe it is can actually see improvement in immune system health because his body isn't constantly fighting it. Pertussis is no joke and yes the 90 day cough is a the "old" name for it. Any adult reading this should be reimmunized for it if they haven't been. In the US when its time for a new tetanus booster just ask for combo one with it as well (DPT).

Hang in there Zen.

Yes, I'm not worried about the 42, it was just to say that he's in good shape. When he got his appendix out when he was 15, he was in elite soccer and his RHR was ~35 - overnight he was hooked up on that machine that beeps if your heart rate is 'dangerously' low, but since they knew he did sport they ended up taking him off that because it kept beeping and the lowest they could set it to beep was 40. He's been very fit for a long time.

And thanks for the tip about the pertussis booster. I guess I'm very lucky that I didn't get sick when he had it!! Or maybe my immune system still remembers the vax from when I was younger......

He's going to start physio today, I hope he will start to feel better soon. He is very uncomfortable now and limps when he walks - which is basically only in and around the house. When he cooks, he can barely pick up the frying pan, the numbness is in his dominant hand. I wish I could do more for him sad sad
