I have a question about how a full moon affects people. We have 13 year old twin boys with Autism. One is high functioning and the other is severe and non verbal. Our more severe Son is about a 3 year old cognitive level and has behavioral issues.

Yesterday evening he was off the charts in behavior, we literally had to just stand by him and follow him around the house and out in the yard he will just take off running out the door. His attention span on a toy or task was about 15 - 30 seconds. This morning I took him to school and it took 5 people to get him from my car. He was throwing anything he could get his hands on and was hitting anyone that came near him.

He is such a sweet kid, loves people and is very social, he’s a hugger, but today and yesterday were off!!!

My W has always said the behavioral flares are around the full moon, I’m not so sure but wonder what y’all think about it.

Well it depends on which study you believe.

So many out there. Some for, some against.

We know the moon affects the tides.

We know that a full moon can disrupt sleep.

The best way to tell is to keep a journal of your sons behaviors and any other factors that may be at play.

Sleep.

Stressful situations.

Changes in routine.

Etc.

Thanks Dragn, journaling his behavior flares is a great idea.

I absolutely have trouble sleeping during full moons. Always have. No idea why.

So I can believe that your son is sensitive to the cycles but tracking it will give you the answers.

Good luck!

I dont have black out curtains on my bedroom windows. When it's a full moon my room is lit up, even worse when it's all snow covered outside and the light reflects off the snow.

Strange things happen everyday but it seems more strange things happen during a full moon. 9 people dead on I-57 in Missouri. chain reaction wrecks in fog. A 13 year old boy was driving a big pickup truck in Texas, hit a van loaded with college golfers and their coach - 5 dead. All around me, grass fires, high-speed police chases, car ran through a fast food restaurant. Busy days yesterday and today. My Grandfather was 1/2 Native American and he always spoke about how a full moon affects people.

As a cop we used to dread Friday evening and nights if they were on a full moon. Without exception this was the night with the crazy people and the wild events.

As a rule weekends when people tended to drink and dope were harder than normal weekdays.
Fridays were "dirtier" than Saturdays. With dirtier I’m referring to more fights at bars, more passed out people, more domestic disturbances, more parties at 5AM that are out of control… We attributed this to people getting drunk after a long, strenuous work-week and simply being tired.
Saturday nights were generally milder, but busier. More people out, but generally more controlled.

Let’s put it this way: Back when I was in the cops the department provided a number of stab-resistant vests and bulletproof vests, but no combined purpose vests. We had to decide if we thought it more likely we get shot or stabbed. Both were hot and bulky and of disputed quality and we mostly opted to wear neither. They were department property, and it was unheard of for officers to own or provide their own.
It was a completely different environment from now. I only once physically pulled out my sidearm the near-decade I was in, and never pointed it at anybody.
On normal Fridays and Saturdays many would opt to take a vest, but they would be kept in the vehicle rather than worn. If you were assigned an area outside the party-zone you were fine having neither a stab- nor bulletproof vest.

On Fridays with a full moon…
The Lieutenant had to allocate the stab-proof vests and others settled for bullet-proof vests. Those that got stab-vests would put them on before leaving the station. This would be the officers allocated to the nightlife areas, and as the bars closed down the vests were handed over to the guys in the suburbs dealing with noise-complaints and domestic violence.
It was a completely different vibe.

The two times I confronted someone who wanted to cut me to pieces: Friday nights, one on a full moon. I still have a small scar on my right-hand wrist to remind me.

Bigger, I believe that. Crime DOES increase during a full moon. I've seen that.

If the full moon can change the tides of the ocean, it can also change people's mindset.

Worked in the medical field for over 20 years - several of those were in an ER. The nurses and doctors swore that the full moon affected human behavior. My husband has restless leg syndrome and it is definitely worse during a full moon.

I have a friend who is an intake counselor for a behavioral health unit, and she says that everyone she works with is convinced of the psychological effect of a full moon.

Thanks for the responses. Yesterday was the actual full moon and his behavior was good. He got out of car at drop off with no issues. As mysterious as the full moon is, autism is very unpredictable.
