I so wish people would use their HEADS. And stay alive.
Our family lost a new family member to Covid two night ago. He was my young cousin's newly wed husband.
Another one of those people who thought they were too healthy, too young and too active to catch Covid.
They aren't anti-vaxers but rather caught up in wedding plans last April, building a new home and both have (had) six figure income careers. They hiked, they ran marathons, lived healthy -- and were a real Ken and Barby couple.
She had one shot of J&J vaccine in May but the new husband kept putting off getting a vaccine. They both became ill the end of August. She had a mild case of the virus but recovered quickly. On September 1, he was in the hospital and by the next day he was in ICU fighting for his life. On the vent. Two nights ago he passed away. She was at the hospital everyday, looking at him through a glass wall. No one else was allowed to visit.
She is heart-broken. It's not the time to say "I told you so" but we are all wishing they had paid attention to SCIENCE and gotten the vaccine. I have heard so many 20,30 and 40 year olds say they are HEALTHY and they don't think Covid would get them. DEAD wrong.
Now we are preparing for a funeral instead of the party that was being planned to show off their newly built home. Their wedding registry is still online, they had just started their life together. Sad thing is, her Mom is a nurse and begged them to get vaccinated. I'm glad she had at least one vaccine or I feel she would be gone too.

I'm sorry JG
That's so tragic and so very sad. And utterly preventable!! It is mind-boggling to me that there are still people who don't want to take covid seriously. My thoughts are with your family right now.
A friend of my mom's almost lost her husband to covid. They were both rabid anti-vaxxers - typical 'it was rushed', 'don't know what's in it', 'side-effects aren't worth the risk', blah blah blah. Well he caught it and ended up in a coma for 6 weeks and almost died, but happily some kind of miracle happened and he didn't (despite the fact that he was on a vent and his organs were starting to fail - truly was a miracle). He has to relearn how to walk and will have a very long haul with his recovery, but man are they singing a different tune about the vaccine now.

I'm so sorry for your family's loss. It's even more heartbreaking when it could have easily been prevented.
My daughter's FIL got Covid and was in the hospital for 24 days. He's now on oxygen and can't work. (He drives a truck.) I don't know how he and his wife are going to make it financially. He and I are on opposite ends of the political spectrum and have always jokingly chided each other about it. I saw him a couple of weeks ago and he seemed to be defending himself from assumed judgment from me by saying "At least each of us are free to make our own choices." I agreed with him and didn't say another word about it. I'm betting that if he had it to do all over again knowing what he knows now, he would have chosen to get vaccinated. I hope that he can heal fully and get back to normal.
I read a headline this morning that the flu is expected to be especially nasty this year, so I'll be going for a flu shot for the first time in decades.

One thing the pandemic has made painfully obvious is that we as a species seem to have completely lost sight of the concept of "common good." The 'personal choice is paramount' crowd have no problem running to the hospital to suck the life out of the medical system when they get sick, and we all pay the price because when legions of doctors and support staff burn out and quit over the exhaustion and abuse they're experiencing, the whole thing collapses.
A few weeks in ICU comes with an astronomical price tag and it's playing out over and over and over again. It makes me so angry, especially when we have a simple and effective thing to keep us out of the hospital in the first place.
Being willfully ignorant at this stage of the game is the equivalent of driving drunk in the wrong lane on the freeway. Your collateral damage may vary.
It's so dumb and I can't even anymore with the conspiracy nutjobs comparing vax mandates to the Holocaust. There are actually people calling what's happening in ICU the "death protocols" and they are harassing care teams with FB live videos and making death threats. I hate to say it but it's only a matter of time before someone goes so far as to try to blow up a hospital McVeigh-style.
Honestly it makes me thankful I never had children.

I don't understand why more people don't talk about the therapeutics that are readily available for people who get Covid. Both vaccinated and unvaccinated people can still get it.
If done early enough...within 10 days from the start of symptoms...the monoclonal antibody infusion is quite effective. Most people are feeling better within HOURS. The infusion is FREE...but there may be a charge for the use of the facility.
For those who have been exposed to a person who is positive for Covid...they can get this same treatment in a subcutaneous injection. It can be just as effective.
It is such a shame that this is causing so much division. Ignorance on BOTH sides of the debate is costing lives

There is talk amongst the family that perhaps his CHURCH - one of those big MEGA churches .... might be the reason he wasn't vaccinated. I sure hope that's not the case. I guess at this point it doesn't really matter, dead is dead.

Because there isn't enough of it and not all facilities have it. My doctor was telling me about a patient he knows, who developed COVID. He lived in a remote area, so came into town for treatment because he was elderly, obese and diabetic. But once he got into town and went to the hospital, he was told he wasn't high enough on the priority list, that others who had more co-morbidities were ahead of him. Luckily he recovered, but it was a long month of not knowing which way he was going to go. So yea, people are trying to get it, but many are not successful.

The infusion isn't the only therapeutic treatment though. Although from what I understand it is the best because it works quickly if taken in time.
I read that the infusion was readily available everywhere and that has definitively been the case where I am. Since hurricane Ida hit our area...people don't even need a doctor's order to get the infusion. A family member of mine showed up with the positive test result and was seen immediately. By that afternoon their fever was GONE and they felt much better!

Many many man hours have been spent trying to make the infusion available to patients in our area. There simply is not enough staff to handle all the covid patients and the infusions and not enough of the infusions for all who qualify.
The infusion is only for mild cases of covid.
Our hospital staff is exhausted. There are 200 covid patients in the hospital and I live in a rural area.
Jeannie, I am so sorry for your loss.

.
The monoclonal antibody infusions are not for mild cases of Covid. They are for NEW cases of Covid...those who have only had symptoms for up to 10 days. Once the viral load gets too high...the infusion isn't as effective. That is why it is imperative that people get the infusions as quickly as possible once they test positive.
I don't know how long ago the subcutaneous injection has been around for people who have been exposed to a positive Covid person...but that is a very promising prophylactic/therapeutic for sure
!

My understanding is that the infusion is for patients with mild to moderate symptoms within the first ten day of having symptoms.
It is very sad people are not following the science. Eighty eight percent of those hospitalized in our hospital with covid are unvaccinated.
My cousin's FIL fell and ended up in a rehab facility in a different state than where I live. He contracted covid from an unvaccinated employee. He is dying and his son can't be with him.

The way the antibodies in the infusion work is that they attach themselves to the "spikes" on the coronavirus which prevents the virus from entering the cells. That is why it is so important to get the infusion as soon as you start having symptoms. If you wait too long...the viral load may be too much for the antibodies to be effective.
This is also why it is good to get the subcutaneous injection if you have been exposed to someone who has Covid. It could literally kill the virus before it even has a chance to replicate!!!
Our state showed 91 percent of unvaccinated people in hospitals at the start of the latest surge. But as of Friday...only 81 percent of unvaccinated people are in the hospitals. The deaths for those who are unvaccinated...although still in the majority...keep going down as well. I can only wonder as to why??? Maybe the vaccinated are still thinking they are immune...so they brush off the symptoms as something else until the viral load is too much for the infusion to help? In the meantime...these vaccinated people are spreading the virus to both the vaccinated and unvaccinated.
I knew of several people who contracted the virus from a vaccinated person because she thought she just had sinus issues. She ended up infecting 27 people...that they know of...by not getting tested until several days later. She felt horrible...but she ignorantly believed that she was immune from getting the virus because she had been vaccinated.
To date...the ONLY people who are immune to the virus are those who already HAD the virus. How long that immunity lasts is still up for debate. But the consensus is that a person who has had the virus does have immunity for a while.

But our own SI HFSSC had it twice, just a few months apart. Hopefully she'll chime in and let us know how close it was - I think it was maybe four months. So not much immunity even for some who have had it.

My ER nurse friend has had it at least three times, maybe more. The last go-round, she was 100% asymptomatic and had to get tested for employment. She was positive. You can definitely get it multiple times.

There is not an unlimited supply of nurses who are needed to give the infusions. The nurses had to be pulled from other services to do the infusions which leaves those areas short staffed.
Theses people are being asked to work with known positive covid patients. They can get sick themselves or bring it home to their families.
The hospital had to coordinate to come up with an area to do the infusions where the patients would not come into contact with anybody else. The patients are waiting in their cars and being escorted to the treatment room and escorted back out so they don't come into contact with anybody else.
This is a lot of extra to put on the health care system. There simply are not enough staff to do everything and the staff that are working are exhausted.
Stay well and be kind and especially to those working in health care.

My family member who got Covid thought they would have it set up where they couldn't get in contact with others. But when they went to the hospital...they called the number they were given...someone came out to their vehicle and escorted them in...right through the ER! They were surprised that they went that way!!
They were brought up to another floor and it looked like it was just for Covid positive patients. After their time was up...they were sent down in the elevator...alone...and had to walk through the ER again to get out.
After Hurricane Ida left the hospital non functioning...an area was set up near the hospital where people could just go with their positive test results. The subcutaneous injection was given in the doctor's office though...but they weren't positive for Covid at that point.
I totally agree with you about those nurses and Healthcare workers who have worked so tirelessly to help all of us through this very trying time. I would say more about them being disrespected right now...but it will get political...so I will just leave it there. Hopefully these brave souls will be able to get some rest.
I also agree that Covid can be caught again and again. I just stated that people who have had Covid are the ONLY people to have immunity from it for a while. However...vaccinated people do NOT.
I really PRAY that we can ALL stay well and be KIND to one another.

They also wouldn't have that many people in the hospital if everyone was vaccinated because though you can still get it, you are very unlikely to need hospitalization for it. The odds of catching COVID and the odds of having a serious case are not equal between vaccinated and unvaccinated. Not remotely close.
