Big Mister is in 3rd grade this year. He started the year in distance learning. He went back to the building full time in mid Feb. On the 15th we got a call from the principal before school saying that someone in his class tested positive and he should quarantine and would be doing distance learning until the 25th and could return to school on the 26th. He was with me for the weekend, then I dropped him at XW’s this afternoon. We had decided to get him a test today. XW texted me and said Big Mister tested positive.

He feels fine.

I’ve had my first shot (Pfizer). XW has had both and step dad has had his first. We all feel fine too.

But holy crap this is going to be a little wonky trying to decide how to move forward with the adults’ work schedules. We all will check with our HR depts tomorrow.

What a shit show.

Aww man! That stinks.

Most companies are doing 10 days at home with direct contact. So you should not be going to work. Also keep your eyes open for symptoms and get tested if you have any. You are not "Immune" until 2 weeks or more after the last shot. Lots of nurses working covid got it between first and second vaccine.

I was wondering how quarantine would work with families in different households.

I read parents were upset that once the child was told to quarantine they had to stay with one parent. But thats up here.

Hopefully neither of you get sick. Sending mojo.

Big Mister will be staying with XW and stepdad for the remainder of his quarantine. Assuming I stay healthy and test negative, I can go back to work on the 27th.

Here’s a question for people that know, does reporting his positive test extend his quarantine?

Reporting to who?

Up here the health department is informed of every possible close contact and positive case.

And i do believe that once confirmed positive the quarantine is extended to a full 14 days, from ten.

But again, thats where i am.

Typically, but that's pretty region or even entity specific. The quarantine period is set to allow for symptoms to appear. 10-14 days is the upper 2 sigma point between date of infection to onset of symptoms. That is 95% of people will have turned symptomatic by then if they had caught covid. How positives are handled is also regionally specific. Some require that they remain quarantined until a follow up negative test (or two) . Others use date ranges on the knowledge that most stop being infections right after the onset of symptoms. Typically day 3-6 after exposure.

I'm so sorry, MN. Please stay vigilant to Big Mister's health even after he is negative for this. They have said that the disease can become the so-called (I believe) MIS-C in children. Please educate yourselves of the symptoms and signs of it and watch him for the time period it is said to strike after having Covid. Reports I heard said many or most who got that after having been asymptomatic.

All you adults should also be careful to stay healthy, even to test. Being vaccinated does not mean you are 100% protected, and you would also be asymptomatic, too.

Our school district here was set to go to full in-school attendance this week after being hybrid with 2-day attendance split classes and all remote Wednesday. Some young, wise students I know worried that having everyone there would cause an outbreak. One "bet it would only last one to two weeks" before shutting down entirely for cases. That is now moot, as they wisely decide to stay as it was for the rest of the school year, unless forced to go back to full remote learning.

Mojo to all for speedily and completely getting past this.

I'm so sorry to hear this - I hope he's feeling better soon.

To answer your question, no - he should stay home for 10 days, and report improving respiratory symptoms if he has any, and report no fever or fever reducing medications (Tylenol or Motrin) 24 hours.

I'm not certain about children, but adults tend to feel sicker around day 7, so watch him carefully.

HIS quarantine (technically "isolation") ends 10 days after the onset of symptoms and 24h after end of fever (with no drugs reducing the fever). This is for mild cases (no hospitalization). If he tested positive, but isn't showing symptoms, the 10 day clock starts when he tested positive (day he was tested, not when you got the results).

YOUR quarantine ends 14 days after your LAST contact with the sick person (which technically is the 10th day of being at home with a sick family member - you should be quarantining for 24 days!)

If your last contact with Big Mr was (say) 4 days ago and he's staying with his mom, you have to Q for another 10 days.

Yes. 24 days total. When a student in Big Ds class tested positive all the kids in his class had to quarentine for 10 days. All siblings of those students as well. If Big D had tested positive my other kids would have had to quarantine another 14 days after his positive test and with no contact with him.

Im actually glad they are remote learning now.

Is Big Mister still feeling alright? How are you feeling?

Well first i am glad you are negative and you both feel fine.

Question: are you taking the second test as a part of a health order, so many negative tests before return to work or just because you want to?

I could have gotten all my kids tested. Of negative they could have all returned to school after the first ten days AND at least seven days post exposure because the virus takes that long to incubate.

*fixed word

Did your son test positive with a rapid test?

If so, I wouldn't trust it. Get the PCR test, which is much more reliable.

(The rapid tests are designed to screen lots of people fast and pick out people who are "contaminated." False positives are and acceptable issue (false negatives are not))

Although, based on the times you cited, I don't think his quarantine would end any sooner/later, but you'll have a better understanding of whether he really did have it.

Aw MN, I'm sorry about that. One of my sons had covid, but he doesn't live with me (going to university in a different country). He was 22 when he got it and he had it rough.

I hope that you stay health and safe, and Big Mister and the other household are also safe.

Yep. Big Mister had no symptoms and went back to school today. I wonder if his test was a false positive. I’d like him to get the antibody test to see if he really had it.

I tested negative on a rapid test last Tuesday and took a non-rapid test (?) on Saturday which also came back negative. (And came back quick!). I can go back to work tomorrow.

We all feel fine.
