My turn for a vaccine question

My adult DD and I are both allergic to Penicillin.

She is telling me we should not get the vaccine.

She said it does not matter which one, they are all dangerous.

I have read conflicting things about this. But, from what I have read, we should be good to go.

I am asking all the great medical people we have here...

What, if anything, is known about these vaccines and this particular allergy?

Thank you.

There's no ingredient in common between penicillin and any of the covid vaccines. Those with severe allergic responses to anything should be tracked more carefully post shot than those who don't.

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines both have publicly listed ingredients and they are VERY few. There is nothing that could cross react with any antibiotic allergies.

Moderna Vaccine:

Active ingredient

mRNA (Nucleoside-modified mRNA encoding the viral spike (S) glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2

Lipids

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) 2000 dimyristoyl glycerol (DMG)

1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine

Cholesterol

SM-102 (Proprietary to Moderna)

Salts

Thromethamine

Thomethamine hydrocholoride

Acetic acid

Sodium Acetate

Other

Sucrose

Pfizer Vaccine:

Active Ingredient

nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (modRNA) encoding the viral spike glycoprotein (S) of SARS-CoV-2

Lipids

(4-hydroxybutyl)azanediyl)bis(hexane-6,1-diyl)bis (ALC-3015)

(2- hexyldecanoate),2-[(polyethylene glycol)-2000]-N,N-ditetradecylacetamide (ALC-0159)

1,2-distearoyl-snglycero-3-phosphocholine (DPSC)

cholesterol

Salts

potassium chloride

monobasic potassium phosphate

sodium chloride

basic sodium phosphate dihydrate

Other

sucrose

I am allergic to multiple drugs, specifically antibiotics. It’s easier to list the ones I can take. I’ve had anaphylactic reactions to X-ray contrast and to the preservative in a flu vaccine I got about 20 years ago. (Thimerosol)

At any rate, I discussed all of this with our medical director and got both vaccine doses without a hitch.

If you’ve had an anaphylactic reaction (hives, throat swelling, tongue swelling) to a previous vaccine or to any of the listed ingredients then it’s prudent to speak to your doctor and to receive the vaccine somewhere with available emergency treatment.

I have a serious allergy to death.

That's why I'm getting the COVID vaccine the minute I can!

You will be asked about allergies before you are jabbed. If they have any concerns they will advise you.

Initially there were concerns about anaphylaxis in those with a prior history of anaphylaxis regardless of cause.

When you receive your vaccine they make you wait a full 15 min which would more than cover an anaphylactic reaction. They have medical staff a epipens and airway equipment there ready to go if in the absolute rarest of reaction were to occur.

PCN allergy general or anaphylactic is not an exclusion to the vaccine.

Bigger makes an excellent point!

I was tested long ago and reacted to all sorts of odd things, eggs, chicken, etc. I eat all of them without a problem. I've had reactions to most pain pills, Vicodin, codeine, hydromorphone, etc. I had a reaction to one muscle relaxant. My reaction is headache or itch, sometimes both. I regularly have flu shots, had a TD booster, no problems. I'm not sure why the skin tests identified so many foods. At the time, my asthma was very out of control, that's why I was tested.

In NJ, one waits 30 minutes after all vaccines.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond.

I do not need any convincing. I have said from the beginning of this that I will be getting the vaccine.

But, now, I have real medical experts answers to pass along to my DD. Hopefully, she will stop getting her "information" from Dr. Google.

My son and I are both allergic to penicillin. I'm also allergic to other antibiotics and my son has severe food allergies. We have both received the vaccine - I've had both with normal reaction and my son has had his first with no reaction.

We both received Moderna. I brought an epi-pen along just in case. The medical folks giving the shots said they hadn't seen anyone with allergies have a bad response at their location and they were doing thousands. I think the odds are small of having a bad outcome.

Just got Pfizer round one on Friday. I am allergic to penicillin. I stayed 30 mins after the shot instead of 15. All is well.
