INVESTIGATIVE TIPS AND LINKS A/K/A SEARCHING FOR SANITY

This thread replaces the Searching thread.

After working on this every spare minute for 10 years and with many, many thanks to Momof2 for helping, the Searching Thread is has finally been redone! OK, not every spare minute. It’s been reorganized with dead links taken out and new sites and topics added.

HOW TO NAVIGATE THROUGH THE PAGES:

Each topic is a separate post on the thread as listed below with the Table of Contents on the top, to be easier to search.

To find something specific - since this is such a long thread, click 'control' and the 'F' key at the same time, then enter your search term and click 'find next.'

INTRODUCTION:

How to start SEARCHING to find your sanity.

SWS = Suspected Wayward Spouse a/k/a Target

SOP = Suspected Other Person

▸ DO NOT CONFRONT YOUR SWS UNTIL YOU HAVE YOUR OWN DOCUMENTED AND VERIFIED PROOF or they will lie, deny and go underground. Trust us on that.

▸ Start a time line spreadsheet and document everything - including dates and times of SWS behaviors, all lies, all nagging gut feelings. Leave space for additions. Eventually things will make sense. Look for patterns. Cross reference with pay checks, cell phone bills and credit card bills.

▸ Make another one for information on the OP and another on the OP’s spouse for contact information.

▸ Take any information that you do have and start to search the information with the links on this thread. Your fact list will build.

▸ Often what you find is devastating - think about having a friend nearby for comfort - especially when listening to a tape.

▸ Even the most underground SWS gets sloppy eventually - don’t give up.

Note that SI does not have a search feature, so if you see a post with new or useful information, please add it to this thread.

Home computer:

❏ Watch for windows being closed when you approach while SWS is online and suddenly changed passwords that you can’t have access to even if you always did.

❏ Is the internet history cleared after SWS’ computer use?

❏ Search for saved e-mail and screen names.

❏ Install a stealth keylogger (software or hardware) to get passwords, read e-mails, record chats and view sites visited. Have it forwarded to an e-mail account that you only check outside of the home.

❏ Look for an edited photo of SWS- could have been used to post on a dating site, social network or sent in an e-mail.

❏ Download a desktop search program like google desktop.

❏ Erase your trail.

Internet:

❏ Search web history for sites visited by SWS.

❏ Check dating sites for listings by your WS or the OP. There is a service that will return all e-mail addresses associated with one you have from a dating site.

❏ Conduct all types of searches with any information you have - first free, then paid if needed. Useful links are listed in this thread. Erase your trail.

Screen name search:

❏ Once you have an e-mail address, search it under each domain - aol, gmail, hotmail. yahoo, etc.

❏ Search (links will be on Searching thread) for bulletin board and social networking memberships with screen names and real names of SWS and SOP and read for further personal information to search or you may find proof on those sites.

❏ Also look at their friends’ pages to see what they posted there.

❏ Use this to get an e-mail address if you don’t have it.

Cell phone:

This is how most WS’ get caught.

❏ Is the cell phone being hidden, carried everywhere and the call log deleted?

❏ Check paper billing and sign up for an online account to view calls and text messages. Check as far back as you can to see when it started. Use a spreadsheet and search unknown numbers through Spooftel or have them called to get names / sex.

❏ Keep a list of searched numbers (or you will go crazy!), look for repeats, patterns and odd times of calls.

❏ If you have a password, call a backdoor number (phone won’t ring) and listen to voice mails.

❏ Check minutes used against minutes showing on the call log to know if calls are being deleted.

❏ Forward calls for one day to another number you have access to that has Caller ID.

❏ Read the sim card for data retrieval / old text messages.

❏ Use a hidden voice activated recorder to hear SWS’ side of a cell call. Keep a list of odd calls to check when the bill is accessible.

❏ If you need a new account, look for the provider with real time online account viewing and that allows online viewing of text messages.

❏ Give SWS a pre-paid calling card that secretly tracks calls made - you’d be surprised how many use it on a cell phone thinking they save on long distance.

❏ There are new inventions all the time - there is one now that will turn the cell phone into a listening device in stealth mode wherever the SWS is - especially useful when you think they might be together.

Landline:

❏ Tap it.

❏ Get and check Caller ID.

❏ Order a list of itemized outgoing calls from your provider.

❏ Reverse search or spooftel the numbers and keep a list, look for repeated numbers.

❏ Put a voice activated recorder in the room the SWS uses to speak privately.

❏ Give SWS a pre-paid calling card that secretly tracks calls.

❏ Hit redial to get VM passwords and phone numbers.

❏ There are an unusual amount of hang-up calls.

Names:

❏ Search the internet for address, telephone numbers, birthdate and images.

❏ Check the information to make sure it’s the SOP, then watch for visits to that address or gifts sent on holidays.

❏ Check court records for marriage status and criminal record.

❏ Look up maiden name and search school records to see if it’s someone from WS’ past and do a profession search if you think it’s someone from work.

Addresses:

Reverse search on the internet for owner’s name. Map it. Do a drive by to see vehicles used or when your WS is missing. Search the VIN or license plate of suspicious cars.

Car:

❏ SWS:

▸ Search it.

▸ Install a voice activated recorder.

▸ Track it with a GPS tracking system or by an EZ Pass online account.

▸ Monitor the car's odometer for extra mileage.

❏ SOP:

▸ Search VIN # or license plate # for owner’s name and address. http://www.carfax.com

Home:

❏ Search wallet, pocketbook and briefcase and do a thorough search of non-obvious places. The underwear drawer is the most popular hiding place.

❏ Search for physical clues, such as lipstick stains, perfume odors, secretion stains on underwear and sheets; pieces of paper with notes, passwords or phone numbers (play with the numbers - they may be in code), unexplained match books, receipts, condoms, gifts, etc.

❏ Pretend to go away for a weekend and do surveillance.

Job:

❏ Check pay stubs for over-time on dates SWS said they worked late.

❏ Monitor the time they leave for work and the time they come home and look for a change in pattern or the day that is different.

❏ Check the company web-site for any unknown e-mail address and co-worker’s names.

❏ Make a friend in the office.

DOCUMENTATION:

❏ Credit card bills:

Search for unexplained purchases, track gas up locations, escort services and hotel stays.

Look at restaurant charges for higher than normal bills.

Check hotel frequent user clubs for details.

Look for online purchases that could really be a pay for porn site if that’s a problem.

❏Pay Stubs:

Match to claimed overtime.

❏Credit Report:

Check your spouse’s for unexplained debts, hidden credit cards, cell phones and even an apartment.

❏Telephone Bills: See above.

❏Hotel and Air Fare Mileage Club Memberships:

Yes, some are bold and stupid enough to apply for points when they meet with the OP.

❏Income Tax Records:

Look for hidden bank accounts and other assets by 1099 interest statements issued from the bank for tax records in January.

Post Office Box:

❏Hidden bills have to be mailed somewhere - look for a key or pay for a search.

PI:

❏If you know when and where there will be a meet -up and need proof, hire one or use an SI volunteer in your area.

SOP’s Spouse:

❏Collect contact information to expose A once you have documented proof to send.

❏Try to work together once you have some concrete evidence to share - exchange cell phone bills to cross reference.

SWS:

❏ Sudden interest in new subjects, different foods or music. Mood swings, weight loss.

❏ Notice if they take more showers or have a new interest in their appearance, including hair and make-up, clothing, going to the gym, new underwear, waxing.

❏ Smells of cologne or perfume.

❏ Carries cell phone everywhere.

❏ Takes lap top on a family vacation.

❏ Spends excessive time on the computer to use the Internet. Is always in a chatroom or playing an online game.

❏ New sex moves or no sex.

❏ Watch their eyes and body language when they lie vs telling the truth for future reference.

❏ Ask them to take a lie detector test.

❏ Is secretive about Internet/computer usage. Closing the computer window when you approach. Moves the computer to a private spot.

❏ Suddenly goes to bed later than you. Put these times on your list to check phone and computer usage.

❏ Starts a fight and leaves (list these times). Picks fights over trivial things. Getting you to be the bad guy.

❏ List dates/times they are missing and look for a pattern.

❏ Encourages you to do things without them like taking a trip.

❏ Accuses you of cheating and asking when you are going out so it looks like they are checking on you, but really they are looking for free time.

❏ Forgets to wear their wedding ring.

❏ Manipulating you into initiating a divorce.

❏ Gaslights you when caught in a lie.

YOU:

❏ Listen carefully to your gut feeling. Trust it.

❏ Try to eat right and sleep, so you have strength to continue.

❏ It is absolutely normal to go on searching rampages and also to not be bothered ("BS fog"), and then wake up another day and say - WTF! Why am I ignoring this?!

Use a search engine (google / msn/ dogpile/ yahoo etc.) for name, screen names, employers for a staff picture or any group they might belong to, then click the image tab on top of page. Also search local hang-outs and local band websites for online publicity pictures. Look in local libraries for yearbooks.

Usenet predates the web. Any one of your WS who uses Google often, or who is a techie, will probably have come across it before. It's so old-fashioned now that there's an assumption that you won't go looking for that stuff.

If you use Thunderbird, Outlook Express, Agent/FreeAgent, and other email/news readers, you can poke around a little bit and see if your WS has subscribed to any of these groups independently of Google. A common practice my X used was to subscribe long enough to read some posts and post some messages, then unsubscribe so it didn't show up in the "subscribed" list. he'd delete sent messages, and I'd be none the wiser.

Oops, except that almost every news reader has an auto-complete function in the subscription bar. All I had to do was type alt and I could see every group ever looked for and subscribed to. Go to your applications page and view "notes." When you are looking at your own notes, you should be able to change the 10 digit member id#, and the page in question may appear. You can also use this to view some notes on privatized pages.

People make their pages seem invisible by not being found in FB "find friend" searches, but all their stuff is still out there, and also when they agree to an app, it bypasses some of the securities levels people otherwise had or wanted to have.

Under the "Account" link in the upper right hand corner of your Facebook page there is a link that says "Download Your Information." By clicking that line it will bring you to another page which will ask for the password. When you request the download, which comes in a zip file, it will give you everything posted from the page since the account was opened on Facebook. You'll get all of the saved photos, all posts, all the saved messages, all the notes, etc. It may be quick or take a few hours - depending on the size of the file.

If you can, log into their account, go into account settings, and then to notifications. MessenPass can only be used to recover the passwords for the current logged-on user on your local computer. You cannot use it for grabbing the passwords of other users. When you run MessenPass, it automatically detects the Instant Messenger applications installed on your computer, decrypts the passwords they store, and displays all user name/password pairs that it found in the main window of MessenPass. If from some reason, MessenPass fails to locate the installed Instant Messenger application, you can try to manually select the right folder of your IM application by using 'Select Folders' option (from the File menu). AOL INSTANT MESSENGER:

- To find AIM screen names being used on a computer:

Click on My Computer, Documents and Settings, (selected administrator folder) and then click on Application Data and then on Aim. This will show you a list of screen names being used on your computer.

- AIM downloaded files storage:

Click on My Computer, Documents and Settings, (selected administrator folder) and then click on Application Data and then on Aim. This will show you a list of screen names being used on your computer. Click on one of the Screen Names, click on Resources and then on Downloads. This is the default directory for downloaded files. Any files that have been transferred will be stored in this folder unless the user has changed the default download location.

- To find out when AOL Instant Messenger was installed on a computer, use Windows Explorer and go to C:\Program Files\AIM95\install.log View the INSTALL.LOG file with any text editor. This will contain the date and time that the installation began.

- To find out if someone uses AOL IM:

Sign on to AOL IM, click on People, then on Find A Buddy, then choose from By E-Mail Address, a dialog box will appear where you can type in an e-mail address to search for. If the person owning that e-mail address has signed up for AOL Instant Messenger using that address you will see a list of screen names. If the user has created a profile, you may find that information available too. You may also search by name and phone number as well as special interests.

- To find the e-mail address of an AIM user:

This technique will only work if you have access to the person's computer. After signing on, click on My Aim, Edit Options, Update E-Mail Address. This will show you the address that the person used to sign up for or update the account.

- To tell if the user is using AOL or AIM:

Neither AOL nor AIM, notifies members that another has added them to their buddy list or if they have been blocked or deleted. Add your friend to your buddy list and be notified when he or she signs on.

- To find out if the person on your buddy list is using AOL or AOL IM, place your curser over the buddy’s screen name in your buddy list. If the buddy is signed on with AOL, it will tell you in the yellow comment box that pops up.

MSN MESSENGER:-

The default location where the MSN archives messages will be archived is My Documents\My Received Files\YourE-mailAddress\History This location can be changed to any location you choose by clicking the Tools menu, select Options. Click on the Messages tab. Click the Change button next where the default location is listed under Save my conversations in this folder.

- To view the archived history, Click the File menu, select Open message history. You can also right-click a contact in your contact list, and then click Open Message History.

Yahoo! does provide a way to save instant messages manually and does have an archiving feature built in to the program. Neither of them is reliable.

- Manually: click on Conversation, then select Save As. Choose the directory where you would like the file to be saved and click on Save. This is a very difficult process if you are receiving instant messages from numerous users.

- With the Archiving feature but the feature must be manually set up and it doesn’t capture the entire conversation which makes it unreliable: Click on Messenger, then click on Preferences and select Archive. Check or uncheck the appropriate boxes according to what you would like to archive and click on Ok. - To find where Yahoo received files are stored:

Click Browse to select file from a directory on your computer, floppy disc, a CD or other removable media. Select the file that you would like to send and click Open. There is an option to add a description. Do so if you like then click Send.

A dialog box will appear to confirm that your file has been received. You will receive confirmation when your file has been received

- To find the date and time the service was last used on your computer go to C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ There you will see a file named ypager.log

Even if you are using a bitstream copy of the media, make a copy of the file before examining it. DO NOT open the file. Hold your curser over the file name in Windows Explorer and record the date, time and file size.

Using the copy, check the date, time and file size and make sure that it is the same as the original.

Highlight the file name and right click on it and select “Properties.” Click in the “read only” box. Then click on “Apply.” Now you can open the file without accidentally changing the contents. ypager.log is a plain text file that can be viewed with Windows Notepad. To view it, double click the file. If you don’t already have .log files associated with Notepad, a window will open asking you to select the program you want to use to open it. Select Notepad.

Read from top to bottom. The last entry would the date and time the last message was sent. It doesn’t record the year, so look at the properties for the correct year.

FINDING YAHOO! PROFILES:

Not everyone posts a public profile and when they do, they don’t always make it public. Often members will use false information but many times there is some information that is useful for an investigation.

- You can check for a Yahoo! Profile by going to Yahoo! Profiles at http://search.profiles.yahoo.com/

- Also search their member directory at directory at http://members.yahoo.com/

- If you know a user’s Yahoo ID, you can check for a Yahoo Profile by putting typing the user name at the end of this link: http://profiles.yahoo.com/username Remember to replace “username” with the actual Yahoo ID. (If the user’s Yahoo ID was BadBoy2003, his profile would be located at http://profiles.yahoo.com/BadBoy2003) - To know what Yahoo ID’s have been used on your computer, go to C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Profiles There you will find a list of folders with the names of Yahoo ID’s.

- Yahoo instant messenger: go to "contacts" then "profile" then "view my profile" you will see all the screen names that person has and can look at the different profiles. Helpful for those wondering if their SWS has "secret" screen names. (Tonya)

Double click their name.
