I've fallen behind and really need help a couple times a month cleaning my house. However, every bid I receive is for $40 an hour. Is this typical? In the midwest? It seems so high to me

We do it once or twice a year. It costs us $150 and takes three people about an hour which puts it in the same ballpark $50/hour/person

That's more per hour than what we paid when we were in the Midwest. I paid two people $90 for our 2200 square foot condo, which took about two hours. So waaaaay less than you're being quoted. Have you checked on Nextdoor to see what others are paying?
Since moving to SoCal, I pay $120 for two people who take around three hours, so it's cheaper per hour here. Funny though, my housekeeper recently had heart surgery and is out for a few months, so her sister (who normally comes with her) is doing it alone. She gets through in about 4 1/2 hours, and I'm still paying her $120. I think when the two of them are here together, they talk a lot and get distracted, so it takes them longer. But they also do a much more thorough job than other housekeepers I've had... wiping down things each time that other housekeepers would not do, like cleaning window sills, wiping down floorboards, etc.

That sounds reasonable to me.

$110 for maybe 3 hours of work by 4 people, every 4 weeks.
If you know Chicago, I'd expect to pay more in the Loop, Near North, Near South, Wilmette, Winnetka, Kenilworth, Glencoe, Lake Forest....

I pay $130, twice a month, for 3500 sq ft in Texas. It varies how many come each time, but it’s typically 4-6 hours of work total (sometimes 4 come and it takes 1-1.5 hours, sometimes 3 come and it’s about 1.5-2 hours, occasionally it’s only 2 and that takes about 2-3 hours).

I don’t live in the Midwest but standard low end rate where I live would be $30-35/hr per person with a minimum 3 hour time booking.

I just found someone (and she's working today) for $100 for the job. Although she did preview the place, she said it would take 3.5 hours and she's still there, 4.75 hours later... maybe more than she anticipated...
