So I haven't peaked in here for a while....
Hey NTV- Yes Goats are a thing, and goat milk and butter are definitely high commodity items. That said I could use a goat, because I have a damned coyote that sneaks into my chicken yard a nabs a bird about every other day. We have tried sitting watch. We have set traps. We have not been successful. I will not give up though.
Goats are awesome for the invasive honesuckle that is taking over the midwest, and they will munch on poison ivy all day long. Another reason to get one.....
We have a lady up the road from us that has a herd of Llama's and she is a bit odd, so she is known around here as the crazy llama lady. I feel bad for her animals they are in an enclosed area too small for them , and have no grass. We call them dirt circle Llamas, kind of like dogs that live on a leash and create a dirt circle where they can reach?
Anyway We keep our beehives close to the chickens, seems to keep the flys away...

Since my farrier has rescheduled for Thursday I let all the goats out to graze, girl was already out... Fuzzy remembered we have an apple tree near the end of the driveway and I found them down there. Wouldn't be an issue if our gate wasnt broken. I went down with my water spray bottle and gave them all a squirt then leaned up the gate. They all headed over to the hill of poison ivy. I'm trying to do work on the duck house so I can add in my bantam chickens there. They cant go with the nornsl chickens and rooster because they are jerks and beat the little ones up. Farm life is a blast

Chili, it's worth a shot, but don't put you're expectations up too high.
Tushnurse, I appreciate the info on goats. I always thought they were large mutations of rabbits, so knowing that isn't true is new to me. Thanks!
steadychevy, you didn't see me. I'm a fart induced hallucination.
DragnHeart, please don't tell me the names of any more of your animals. I'm having a hard time remembering them as it is, and knowing that your farm is imaginary kinda cuts into my motivation here.

I could provide photos for reference to prove this is a real place. Of course I'm rather embarrassed by the messy state it is in but oh what the heck.
Left to right: Robbie (white), Tallahassy (black and white, Fuzzy (all black) and in behind the three boys is Ella the white girl. So far so good they haven't figured out the trampoline is a fun place to jump.
Oh and NTV on the topic of farts....my white Arab mare has you beat. Arabs are known for holding their tails up high....my girl does it to release her demons and dammit she stinks!
Edited because I forgot the damn photo...gett'n old ya know lol

Sadly that IS my backyard. I'd have someone take a photo with me in it for further proof but I draw the line with me in photos now. The thread would die for sure, I'd scare ya'all off.
The state of the grass is just sad. Better since we have had some rain. But not great. Just read an article on clover and the history of "domestic grass" and I'm planning on over seeding with clover in the fall.

Look here dragonfart, there's no reason to keep it a secret from us any longer. It's okay to pretend to have a farm for a while. I mean, seriously, who doesn't? But at some point you just gotta let it go. We know the farm's imaginary. Make believe mutant rabbits you people call goats and all.

I'm trying to overcome my hallucinations. It's so hard to do, though.
Dragn, alsike clover is toxic for horses. Phototoxicity. Pink skin may blister but the real damage is to the liver, IIRC. I don't think other clovers are.

Cattle are 70% grazers and 30% browsers. Sheep are 50% grazers and 50 browsers (including forbs). Goats are 40% grazers and 60% browsers. Multispecies grazing can improve pasture and increase carrying capacity. I've too many predators to run sheep with my cattle, though.
Is everyone asleep now so I win?

I'm pretty sure what we have is white clover. The plants arent as big as Alsike. And this is mainly around the house. The back field behind the house where the water trough and shelter are is now a dry lot. I haven't noticed clover in the back. The horses have been here a few years now and haven't shown signs of the symptoms of clover poisoning. I will walk my pasture tomorrow and have a chat with my vet to be sure though.
I dont allow my mare to graze around the house. She comes out for her bucket of grain and pellets and ruffage then back she goes.
The goats eat absolutely everything. We have these tall plants with purple flowers. We watched on goat deep throat the entire plant right to the ground bite if off and keep walking, munching away. Lol

Ha! Not asleep.
For years this land was used doe cattle. Then we brought horses and goats. Yes the damn goats are running with the horses lol. At least just behind the house part. They like to stay close because they know I have corn.
My farmer friend keeps trying to convince me to get into sheep... while they are easier to keep than goats and will keep the grass down better than goats I've got my hands full enough.

Will that mask thingy help with all the livestock smell around here too? Dragon? Steady? (You don't win btw).
Not asleep - just don't have a bovine, ovine, equine or even a porcine in the fight. That's the extent of my leftover knowledge from ag science class and I probably got half of those wrong.

I dont wear a mask at home. Just having a hat on scared the horses one time. And no, all the masks in the world couldn't contain the smell here...IF we are talking about NTV farts that is lol
I ordered online a bunch of face masks for wh. One of them is a jokers face. Today he walked in the door with it on. Said he passed a police officer on the way home while driving and they took a second look lol.
My mask is the mask that came with my ear flap winter hat. So thick as thick can be and fits nice. Also all black.
