Candyman66, how is everything going in San Diego? I've got some in-laws who are pissed about having to wear masks and say it's too hot. One is a lashes specialist and recently got the OK to open up her business again - I'm personally scared for her since I've heard Covid has a high transfer rate through the eyes. But I'm guessing it must be incredibly hot there!

I'm up a bit north in SF. It's been unseasonably hot here. But to be fair, I'm a fog person. And fog's been an endangered species here since 2000. :/

Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I like hearing about this stuff with farm animal care. Probably because I'm into botany, which includes agroecology.

Anyway... continue. You've got one listener here!

Muahahaha

Who would have known that asking questions about folks' animal care techniques would successfully kill this thread for... (checks calendar) almost 2 whole weeks! Does no one else find this interesting??

Either that, or I ask stupid questions.

Anyway, Happy July 4th! I'll be back to kill this thread again laterzz!!!

My apologies. I never saw the question directed at me.

Mosquitoes are irritating to the animals. The flies are worse though.

I've never seen the Mitt but I have seen a roll on bug detergent. Pretty sure my mare would kick me with that. I think its the smell she hates. I was able to spray my hand and wipe it on her. She wasnt thrilled but at least she didn't kick me.

I had planned on getting the horse shelter completed today but wh and our oldest ds were in an ATV accident yesterday. Wh looks like someone took a baseball bat to his face and back. Ds wasnt hurt as bad.

silverhopes.Well it's going to be 92 today but what is unusual is the humidity it's supposed to be 80% so that will be a little uncomfortable. We normally have about 20 to 30% and always worry about fires.

If your friend wears a clear face shield that will help protect her eyes from getting infected but she still needs to wear mask. She can talk to the owner about a UV light if they have central heat or air. The UV light sterilizes the air flowing through the ducts so it reduces the airborne spread of the virus. (I'm a retired A/C repair guy)

Some hotels use a UV wand to sterilize rooms and beds ect that may work to help her equipment sterile. Warning DO NOT LOOK AT HIGH POWERED U/V LIGHTS!!! You can go BLIND very fast!

As far as her staying open, the situation is NOT stable as the numbers keep going up.

I'm 70 and type 2 diabetic (compliments of Uncle Sam and the Vietnam war The gov poisoned us with agent orange ) so I haven't gone out much for 3 months. I miss the beauty of this place.

How is the dreaded covid affecting you up in the far north?? (for me anything north of camp Pendleton is northern CA )

This thread went to the second page. I was going to jump in and claim the title. Missed a few days and look - back to the first page again.

I provide mineral for my cattle that has garlic in it as a mosquito deterrent. I doesn't seem to work for flies, though, and we have deer and horse flies and face and horn flies. I think it reduces but doesn't eliminate the mosquito problem.

I got a mitt to wipe horses with from the feed store, Dragn. I can only go to the counter in the feed store yet because of covid. They have cattle panels up to keep from going into the store part and shopping so I don't know if they have any of those mitts anymore. It used to be that you had to phone your order in and then back into the warehouse to get the salt, mineral, cat food, dog food, whole wheat and layer hen food. You had to stay in your truck while it was loaded.

I just went and saw the post you had about your WH and DS, Dragn. I hope everything works out well for them. Or as well as it could be for your WH with missing teeth and broken jaw.

Thank you.

They both just need time to heal.of course wh wants back to work so we arent short on money. Damn this is when I wish we had a savings and he didn't feel obligated to go back. I've told him not to go to work and give himself time to recover. The next two pays would suck but I dont care. We'll manage. His health means more. I have insisted that if he cant manage the pain hes to come home. Who knows if he will...

Ok so do you think I can sneak some garlic into the goat minerals? They seem to be really bothered by mosquitoes. The horses are annoyed with the flies. I need to take the tractor back there and move the pile of crap further back.

Our stores are open with some restrictions for number of people at a time. I always wear a mask. I haven't seen a Mott for flies but I did see roll on fly deterrents so I'll try that next. My mare is a front kicker so I really dont want to piss her off. Our big guy let me spray him. I guess he understood that I was trying to help.

This thread isn't going to die, just when it gets quiet something interesting happens.

I'm in a warm climate and everyone's got the one layer stretch masks but I think the homemade cotton quilt fabric ones are cooler and easier to wear. In Montana last week they were joking that only the out of state tourists were wearing them. In Utah they were debating whether to require masks. I noticed people were fine to wear them in Costco and other places that required it. I'm so used to it now that I've got one on my wrist ready to put on whenever I go out.

Thank you everyone for your wisdom and healing.

I think the thread killer thread in Fun and Games was about who would be the last to post, that 999 post. It ended up dying before it got to 50 pages though.

I wear the mask that cane with my winter ear flap toque. Its thick. Fits nice up on my face. I dont have issues with feeling smothered like I've heard others complain about. My only issue is trying to understand others. Us hard of hearing folks who would watch their mouth are having a hard time. "Please pardon me I'm hard of hearing" is my new saying when I'm out.

I don't know about garlic and goats. Are you milking them? If you are it might taint the milk. Ever had milk from cows grazing stinkweed? Barf.

The mineral I buy has garlic as an ingredient. I buy it from Trouw Nutrietion (ShurGain (sp?).

I haven't found specific goat mineral. They have salt block plus a dish of baking soda and another orange block free choice.

Yep. The rare NTV. Always a pleasure to see

And yes goats are totally a thing. They give you milk and cheese. They are great for clearing bush. They are fun to watch and are very funny.

Timing!!! A friend of mine posted an article about how a military base out west uses a herd of goats and sheep to clear the weeds and bush from the base.

My four goats are doing that for me right now. I typically dont let the boys out (Robbie is an ass and Tallahassy is new here) but since Ella and Fuzzy were already out I figured they'd stick together as a herd and they are. Munching away at the weeds.

Now now Dragon...you're not actually hoping to be the one to nab the trophy or something, are you? I think we thread-killers are quite a lovely bunch as a collective.

And hey pureheartkit! Hadn't seen you slummin' over here in a spell.

I'd love a llama but around here it's mostly alpacs. While llamas are good herd protectors alpacas, so I have been told, are not.

We finally got rain here. Like flood warnings and funnel cloud storm crazy. Its nice and cool out. Thought my goats were in their house as they free range now and goats hate the wet but found them on the deck under the gazebo. Spoiled brats!!!

Now now Dragon...you're not actually hoping to be the one to nab the trophy or something, are you?

Yes!!!

But I'll be happy with just a secondary prize of wine and chocolate if anyone cares to share lol
