I initially thought that Amazon derived a subscription price from the current price less the subscription discount. They don't do that if the price went down. I was on a subscription that saved me 11 pennies; they claimed they saved me $1.50, which they did from the price when I originally subscribed.
I cancelled and re-upped. That did save me $1.50 for a few minutes of work. It remains to be seen if that's a good return on my time investment. If it turns out to be $1.50/month, it's a great return. If it's a one-time $1.50, not so much.
If you buy something from 'zon - or anyone else, come to think of it - on subscription, it may pay to check the current price every so often.

Is a subscription the same as being a prime member?

Not Prime. If you buy something regularly, you can subscribe, and they'll ship it to you on your schedule. There's a small discount from the price of the first order. It's convenient.
Sometimes it's a bit weird. I bought a Melitta coffee pot a few years ago and I buy filters pretty regularly. They offer to send/sell me coffee pots on a subscription basis. I guess some people break pots often, or Amazon hopes they do. I hope saying this doesn't jinx me.
