Sunshine After the Storm: Moving On, Healing Triggers, and Reclaiming My Life

It feels like sunshine has finally broken through. I originally planned to share a very long and detailed story about the betrayal and chaos in my life. But after dealing with non-stop, heavy bleeding for nearly seventy days, I finally had a D&C procedure two days ago to treat my thickened endometrium. Today, my body is recovering, and I am feeling a lightness in my spirit I haven't felt in months. Now, I wonder if I even need to dwell on the painful past anymore, or if I should focus on sharing my recovery and moving forward.

My husband and I have been together for four years, married for three happy years. I truly believed he was my safe harbor—attentive, caring, and trustworthy. But on June 27th, after a big fight, he flew to another city to meet a woman he’s just met online a week prior.

During those five days they spent together, he completely ignored my WeChat calls. When he came back, I forced him to confess, and he admitted the most agonizing detail: they had unprotected sex.Before he returned, I had actually written a scheduled email to my future self, telling myself to stay calm, avoid revenge, and remember that I still loved him. But in reality, the pain was too raw. I couldn't control my anger. I started giving him the cold treatment and ignoring his calls to make him feel the agony he caused me. Pushed away, he turned to her for care, and within four days, he demanded a divorce, claiming she was "nice and caring" while I was cold.

Even though we entered the mandatory one-month divorce cooling-off period, he brought her to our city to stay together before he flew back to his home country.

Still trapped in self-doubt, I was secretly thinking about whether this marriage could be saved, especially since he agreed to leave all our assets and our joint business to me. But I need to face the devastating truth: he had muted my notifications, changed my contact name to "Alicia," and re-tagged her as "Wife," telling her, "I love you, I will always have time for you."

The emotional trauma manifested physically. The intrusive thoughts—picturing their sexual intimacy, his sweet words to her—haunted me like nightmares every single night.

It was during my time in the hospital and reading posts on this forum that something finally clicked. I realized that what was torturing me and draining my soul wasn't just his actions, but my own continuous response to these triggers. Every time I replayed his words or those vivid images, I was allowing the pain to inflict new wounds.

To break out of this cycle, I created my own mental circuit-breaker inspired by Phoebe from the TV show Friends. Whenever a painful memory, a picture of them, or a trigger starts surfacing, I picture Phoebe stepping into my mind with her signature boldness, shouting, "Get out of my head!" It instantly interrupts the spiral and stops me from torturing myself.

I'm sharing this as my story because the physical operation felt like a reset button for my mind, too. If he wants to be stolen, let him be. I no longer need to tie my peace or my future to him. He has his choices, and I have mine.

@Shehawk
Thanks for the care. It is a good metaphor to think of someone’s existence as taking up space in our minds.

Yes, we are the landlords of our own minds, and we can decide what stays and what goes.

But sometimes the feelings come back so easily. Last night, as I was replying to several business letters, it was so hard to fall asleep. I started thinking about my marriage. Later, I tried to regain my peace through slow breathing and keeping my body completely still.

Seeking the wisdom to build a love that outlasts the shadows, and understanding the heart of true partnership.

Wishing you a speedy healing on all fronts, Alicia! You've been through a lot this summer.

The initial months are the hardest. He's done you a favor, in a way, by not letting you torture yourself with indecision or getting stuck in limbo (can't decide to R or D). I'm sorry he wasn't the man you thought you married. I hope the sunshine continues, but remember that even if your mind clouds over with pain, grief, or anger, the sun is waiting and will come out again.

WS had a 3 yr EA+PA from 2020-2022, and an EA 10 years ago (different AP). Dday1 Nov 2022. Dday4 Sep 2023. False R for 2.5 months. 30 years together. Divorcing.
