Leaving hurts so much...

I have been traveling a lot lately, and decided while Im in "travel mode" to visit my daughter as well as my brother and sister (they all live fairly near each other, and I live about 1,000 miles away). I've been visiting with them for 3 weeks, and tomorrow Im leaving to go back home. Leaving my brother & sister is one thing. A bit emotional, but I can handle it, and so can they.

My daughter is a different story. She is not my biological daughter. She is from Guatemala, and I adopted her (specifically I adopted her... she is not my wife's daughter). She is an adult now, and very accomplished, having 2 Masters Degrees, owns her own home, and owns a business. She is a very small woman, 5' around 100lbs (I still think of her as a little girl, but that's just me).

It is SO painful leaving her. I knew when I moved out of state that it was going to be difficult, but I really had no idea it was gonna be THIS difficult, or maybe its just that Im getting older... I don't know. We went out to dinner tonight which was wonderful, but dropping her off home and saying goodbye was horrendous (well, we always say "see you soon", not goodbye). I'm sure it is for her too, but she wont show that for my benefit, since she knows this is a gut-wrench for me.

Anyway, I just needed to vent. Im in an anxiety knot at the moment, so writing this is somehow seems to be a little cathartic. Thanks if you took the time to read it. smile

Not to thread jack, but please be aware that this is NOT the case for everyone. It is obviously the case for this poster, but reading something like this can be incredibly painful for a lot of women who were not raised by fathers like him.

To the OP, I don't know how old your daughter is, but my daughters live 3000 miles apart from each other and are in their mid to late 30s. From 2018 to 2023, we lived 15 minutes from one daughter (after relocating across the country from where we had raised them), and now we live four doors down from the other daughter. Each time we moved, it took us further away from one of our daughters and it was the hardest part about moving. Over the years, goodbyes have gotten easier, but they're still difficult.

I remember the days when we'd have to pay a long-distance surcharge to call people just on the other side of the state. Now we have FaceTime which makes it all so much tolerable to live far away! I remember being so grateful for having Skype when my daughter was studying abroad in college - it was a life-saver for us!!

Thank you number4. It most definitely is not the case for all daughters.

Phill, you sound like a great dad and your daughter is lucky to have you in her life!!

I sincerely apologize for causing any pain to anyone for my post...that definitely was NOT my intention sad .

I was going by the adage..."Any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a Daddy". That is why I specifically used the word "Daddies" and not "Fathers". There is a HUGE difference between the two...and I am sure Phill's daughter FEELS it smile .
