So little M was hit on her face with a dodge ball in phys-ed class while wearing her glasses on Wednesday.

Yesterday she didn't want to wear her glasses because her nose and around her left eye hurt.

It's a light purple under both eyes and there's a red mark on her nose from the glasses. There's no swelling. Today she wore her glasses but says it still hurts all around her left eye. Her nose doesn't hurt where the red mark is as much. Still light purple under both eyes.

My question is should I get an x ray done to see if there's any fracture around the eye? I mentioned doing that to someone and their response was not to since there nothing that can be done anyways so why risk her getting sick in a hospital when RSV and flu and Covid are going crazy.

I got whacked in the face with a flag pole when I did colorguard in band at my college. Eye swelled up and I did end up with a small crack on my orbital. It healed on its own. My doctor told me as long as it doesn't chip it's not a problem. Maybe when the swelling goes down, you can have your doc look at it and make sure there isn't a chip.

I would avoid the ER's right now...

This is not an ER kind of injury.i mean if you want to know she has a cracked orbit call your Dr and ask for xray or a telehwalth visit so they can look her over.
Bit there is no treatment for it. Ice it give her some tylenol and in a few days she will be feeling better

This is not an ER kind of injury.

I do realize this isn't an emergency but let me explain.

Last time I saw the doctor for a minor injury I was scolded for NOT going to the ER. He said that any injury where an x ray may be required should go straight to the ER (essentially avoiding wasting his time)...

Also, because dd has vision issues that have gotten worse, her optometrist said any sudden changes in her sight or injuries need to be seen immediately. Because Little M has the same genetic crap going on, the same goes for her. But Little M said she can see fine.

I will call her optometrist and let him know. He may want to see her or not. She's due for new glasses soon anyways since she has some scratches.

I'm no help except so say I like arnica gel on bruises. Don't know if you need to be careful around eyes though.

Thank you everyone for your wisdom and healing.

I've never heard of that gel. Knowing my child she would rub it right into her eyes...

She seems fine enough. Glad picture day is already done lol

Probably the difference in health care systems there. Spawn's primary care office does xrays. We typically go there instead of the ER. This is from experience as they have to wait for the swelling to go down before they will put a cast on so typically an ER trip only ends in yup there's a fracture see your orthopedist/Primary care tomorrow to get a cast/boot. In your DD case, we probably would have went straight to an eye doctor or primary care.

Yes. My family doc doesn't have an x ray in their building. He used to have a lab where you could get blood drawn and an ekg etc but that closed a few years ago. So if we go to the family doc I'd get requisitions for whatever and then need to make appointments at the lab near me. There's an xray and ultrasound clinic in town but you still need to see a doctor first for the paperwork.

When DS broke his foot and I assumed it was just a sprain I took him to the ER because I knew the urgent care doc would send him there anyways.

Our eye doctor office is backlogged for months thanks to covid. There's no getting in there before the New Year. I know this because I had to make dd 2 appointments, one for a field test and one for a detailed eye exam (as requested by her optometrist) and both appointments are next year.

Little M isn't as bruised, not swollen and wearing her glasses without complaints.

All good. Now to make sure the school is aware that students with glasses should take them off before playing dodge ball....duh!
