Hi Folks,
I recently learned a term that I never knew existed. I feel this relevant for everyone to at least have a basic understanding of what it is....
Moderators, if you think it is not helpful to post this, of course remove the post.
The term is "Sockpuppeting"
Here is the definition and AI's stab at explaining how it could manifest itself in an Infidelity related forum.
Sockpuppeting is the practice of using a fake, secondary online identity to deceive others in a forum or community
In a support forum for surviving infidelity, sockpuppeting can be incredibly toxic because users are at their most vulnerable. In this specific context, the deception usually falls into a few distinct patterns driven by a need for validation, retaliation, or severe emotional distress.
Here is what sockpuppeting looks like in an infidelity support forum:
1. The "Fake Cheater" (The Strawman)
The Setup: A betrayed spouse creates a second account pretending to be an unfaithful partner (a "wayward" spouse).
The Behavior: They write a post from the cheater's perspective, making them sound completely unrepentant, cruel, or absurdly selfish.
The Goal: The creator uses their main account to publicly bash this fake profile, or they use the fake profile to trick the community into attacking it. This provides a safe target to release pent-up rage meant for their real-life partner.
2. Artificial Validation (The Echo Chamber)
The Setup: A user is facing harsh feedback or disagreement from the community regarding their real-life situation. For example, the forum might tell them they are being too forgiving, or conversely, too vindictive.
The Behavior: The user logs into a second account to reply to their own thread. The "new" person fiercely defends the original poster, saying things like, "I think you are handling this perfectly, don't listen to the haters."
The Goal: To manipulate the community narrative and force a false consensus that their real-life choices are correct.
3. The "Spying Spouse" (Information Gathering)
The Setup: An unfaithful partner knows their betrayed spouse is using the forum for support and wants to monitor what they are saying to strangers or legal advisors.
The Behavior: The unfaithful partner creates an account pretending to be a supportive ally, a fellow betrayed spouse, or a remorseful cheater. They might actively slide into the spouse's private messages (PMs) to fish for details about divorce strategies, hidden assets, or emotional states.
The Goal: To gain an upper hand in a separation, divorce, or reconciliation process by weaponizing the spouse's private support network against them.
4. False Progress Narrative (Hope Baiting)
The Setup: A user desperately wants their marriage to work but things are going poorly in reality.
The Behavior: They use a second account to pretend to be their spouse, writing a deeply moving, apologetic post about how much they regret the affair and how hard they are working to change.
The Goal: The creator gets to experience the public praise and support of a "successful reconciliation" through their fake account, temporarily escaping their painful reality.
5. Weaponized Deflection
The Setup: A cheater joins the forum genuinely looking for advice on how to fix their marriage but gets heavily criticized by the community for their actions.
The Behavior: They create a sockpuppet account that acts incredibly abusive, aggressive, or unhinged toward the forum members.
The Goal: By comparison, their main account looks reasonable and victimized, drawing sympathy away from their actual infidelity.
