Has anyone followed the very recent news story about jailed "pharma bro" Martin Shkreli and journalist Christie Smythe? There are several articles and interviews that you can google that came out in the last few days, particularly an in-depth Elle article that... I guess paints Smythe in the best light possible given the situation?

Long story short, Shkreli became (in)famous a few years back for raising the price of a life saving drug 5,000%, and is now serving a 7-year prison sentence for fraud charges. Smythe started following/researching him for work, and then it sounds like a possibly one-sided EA (it's debatable if Shkreli had feelings for her, or was just using her), where she quit her job over her crossing professional lines for him, moved out of her apartment and divorced her husband.

One part of the Elle article recalls how she showed up 52-minutes late for an hour long MC session, because she had been visitimg Shkreli in prison.

She says she knew it would be difficult, is/was prepared to wait for him for the remainder of his prison sentence, but also seems highly offended that people that don't know her are judging her and think that it's because she's a woman???

(Call me crazy, but if a man lost his job, house and wife all over a convicted felon, I'd think he was crazy, too...)

Here's the kicker... after all of that, once Shkreli heard an article was going to be published about their "relationship," he stopped talking to her or replying to her emails.

And... as an update since the original Elle article was posted? Shkreli has broken up with/ended his relationship with Smythe via his lawyers.

I can't get it off of my mind, because at no point does the article call it an affair and her BS is barely mentioned. Was it an affair? Am I being overly sensitive to this story? Was she a delusional stalker? Or a willing WS that was manipulated by a con man, who dropped her once she was no longer useful to him?

Funny. I started a thread topic on the same thing only a few minutes before yours! 😂

Yes, it was an affair. I too found her abuse of genuine feminist principles off putting. The things waywards will say in justification for their shitty choices.. What we have here is a great example of affairing down, then being dumped by the AP when she was no longer fun or thrilling or of use. I have no doubt Shkreli used her and it was a pleasant diversion for him for awhile, and also had the benefit of giving him at least one friendly media voice until she was fired. Now she's imploded her family and career for a con man.

She is also using him. She's doing this little media tour to get his attention and to get attention to a book she is writing.

Ah! Sorry for the competing post! I read the article last night, kept thinking about it, and it took me awhile to finish my post since I've been distracted and writing it out on my phone. Didn't see that you had posted about them, otherwise I would have commented instead. 😬

And yes, the feminist aspect she brought us is... annoying? Bizarre? Stupid? Feminism doesn't absolve you of shitty decisions or consequences. Feminism is literally the idea that you should have the same choices ans options as men. If a man did this to his career and wife, I would think he was a delusional idiot, too.

^^^ My thoughts exactly.

An asshole is an asshole, no matter what gender they are. Score one for equality, I guess.
