Greek yogurt = stomach upset?

I've eaten yogurt on occasion before, but never greek yogurt until recently. I ate it twice over the weekend and had terrible stomach upset, but thought it was due to something else I might have eaten.

Well I just ate another greek yogurt about 30 mins ago and my stomach is SO upset.

I was doing some research and it says maybe lactose intolerant? I've never been. Could I be now?

Ugh. Just want I start to eat healthy and explore new foods, I get sick to my stomach.

Anyone else same issues with greek yogurt?

I'm lactose intolerant but I still eat yogurt. Everyone who is intolerant to lactose has different levels. My stomach gurgles. Some people are so bad they vomit.

How is your stomach after eating regular yogurt or dairy in general?

Me - BS, 40 (I'm not old...I'm vintage)

Yes and no! When I eat greek yogurt my stomach expands. I look about 4 months or so pregnant. It happens gradually over the course of the day, and before I knew what was happening I was eating it every morning for breakfast, and in pictures I look very round bellied. It doesn't make me feel sick or upset stomachy at all, just expands me hugely. Doesn't seem to be gas, or if it is it's disinterested in moving around or exiting. I also gain several pounds, just sort of bloat all over, even when my calories are the same. This takes about 3 or 4 days to subside when I stop eating it.

I am not lactose intolerant. I think the bacteria just don't agree with my natural stomach bacteria.

A shame because I love it!

I don't know about greek yoghurt but dd is lactose intolerant. She is fine with milk in things or cheese but has to have only little bits here and there. On vacation though? It's really really bad when we go to the States and she has to take Lactaid before every meal just in case there is anything in her food. I can't count how many vacation days she spent sick and in pain until we essentially started doing everything we can to avoid dairy when we travel. But a piece of cheese at home is no big deal. I don't get it.

So I do think certain foods can be worse for you than others.

I'm lactose intolerant and can't touch any yogurt. People keep recommending it to me for some of the benefits it has, but its not worth the agony.

Yup, it's different for everyone, click, and kind of luck of the draw. Sometimes, also, stress plays a role in digestion and other things we ate on yogurt day could agitate it, too.

I and family members try staying away from the one suspected food or drink for a while, a few days and see how it gets better. That's how we started fifteen years ago and how we worked out Celiac's, as well.

Immodium (lol, almost) has become a best friend for several of us, for that reason!

It could also be an intolerance to something else in the greek yogurt, especially if other dairy doesn't upset your stomach in the same way.

If regular yogurt does not upset your stomach, it could have something to do with the higher protein content of Greek yogurt--it can be up to 3x that of regular yogurt. I don't know why it would cause more problems, but there are people who have problems with higher levels of protein, especially if there is a liver problem.

Seems strange that it would be a lactose issue, as most folks with true lactose intolerance can eat yogurt. Do you eat any other milk products without difficulty?

It is not unusual to develop an intolerance as we age. This happened with me rather suddenly after having DD. I got violently, take me to the hospital ill after eating a dip cone from DQ. I had horrible horrible belly pain. Then it happened when I had a bowl of cereal. I can eat really hard cheeses, and yogurt without any issues. Although I haven't tried the Greek stuff, because it's higher in calories (always trying to loose weight ).

I would say stop eating it, try some regular yogurt if that doesn't bug you then look at what the active cultures are in the two types, and see if they are different.

Interesting.

I am basically a rat, meaning I love cheese and that has dairy in it. I also like chocolate milk and never had any problems with that. I've also eaten other brands of yogurt, and didn't have issues.

I have noticed that I am bloated and feel like I'm not losing any weight due to this yogurt, even though I'm staying my calorie range.

the only reason I started buying it was because it had a lot of protein and I wasn't getting enough protein intake according my food tracker.

I ate a small today with no issues, so maybe I will eat it occasionally and just go for small portions. I agree it could be the bacteria or extra protein in it that doesn't agree with me.

I'd hate to be lactose intolerant. I don't drink milk all that much, but do enjoy cereal or chocolate milk once in a while.

If you are drinking real milk without any gut issues, then you are fine. That would send me to the hospital.

I would guess it's the bacteria in it. Not the protein, which is easily broken down by the body.

It may take smaller amounts for a period of time to allow the bacteria time to establish, and get along with the already present bacteria in your gut.

Don't forget if you need more protein, nuts and seeds are a great option.

545 - OMG that sounds gross and yet tempting at the same time.

tush- i do eat nuts and seeds too, but according to my food tracker its lots of calories and fat in one sitting so I can't eat the amount I usually eat.

T/J - What's the deal with the greek yogurt? I've seen the commercials but I don't get it. What makes it different from regular yogurt?Is it supposed to be healthier? I figured it was just some new fad that will eventually go away.

I hear mixed things about it.

One person flat out told me yogurt isn't good for you and gave me a link as to "why".

basically the greek yogurt has more protein in it and will make you feel full much faster. it also might have more calcium. and yes, I do believe its a fad because a lot products are using "greek" to market their foods now.

i started eating it because it had the protein i needed and it also fills me up quick with very few calories or fat.

Greek yogurt is denser and a bit more versatile. You can use it in cooking, or as a healthier alternative to sour cream. I don't really consider them competitors, they have their own benefits and purposes.

What they call Greek Yogurt here is just a fad ( as a poster already mentioned) They put the word Greek and they know it will sell.

I do not know what brand you bought but the ONLY Greek yogurt that you find in the US and in Greece is the brand name FAGE. The rest are just using the name.

Trust me I know: I am Greek by birth: I was born, raised and lived there before I came to the States not to mention I still spend 4 months every summer there. So I know what I am talking about.

It's different from regular yogurt because it has been strained, removing water, whey and some of the lactose. So yes, it's different than regular yogurt. Like cheddar cheese and cream cheese are different. It's just a different variety of yogurt, prepared differently and with a different nutritional content.

Healthier, who knows, it depends on what you want to be eating. It's just different. A fad - maybe increasingly popular in the US but people have been eating strained yogurt for thousands of years. My mother has made her own strained yogurt as long as I can remember and I grew up eating it. Which is why it confuses me that my stomach can't seem to handle the store bought version. I ate Fage 2% and it's delicious, by far the best tasting store brand.
