They're not really holes... more like upside down ant hills or the crater of tiny volcanoes. There is not activity around them at all... animal or otherwise.
Any idea what these things are?

Sounds like moles to me - my grandparents get them alot in their front yard. They use poison which leaves little dead mole bodies everywhere...

Hey Birthday Girl!!
No, I don't think it's moles, these whole are about the size of a quarter or less... and they're not really "holes" I just couldn't think of what else to call them.

*waving* Hi! Someone else has a birthday coming up pretty soon too!
They might be holes; some burrowing rodents and insects leave what looks like just a mound of loose dirt - when its actually a "plug" or a way to hide the hole - or it could just be squirrels digging around for food.
The little moles that my grandparents murder, I mean kill, are not that big - maybe the size of a small mouse; actually, they may be some type of shrew.

I find little holes in both my front and backyard.
After the corn started sprouting, I realized it was Homer and Jethro - my resident squirrels that I feed.
It's a dried corn cob. Who knew it would sprout.
But, seriously, how do they think they're gonna find one little corn kernel in this huge back yard with 5 feet of snow on top of it?
The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Crayfish would be pretty far from the water if they were in my yard!
Harvester Ants I'm gonna have to look up!

I think I've got the same kind of holes: about the size of a nickel or quarter, with loose dirt on the side. My H suggested crayfish too. I was worried it was hornets. Don't they have nests in the ground sometimes? There's no activity around them and they are smaller than chipmunk holes. If it's from harvester ants, those suckers are huge then!

Are they sort of cone shaped?
If so, you have skunks. And the skunks are after grubs.
Treat the grubs and you'll get ride of the skunks.

They are upside down cones...
Like the top of a volcano...
Which is worse, Skunks or Grubs?
As long as I don't get sprayed, I think I could live with skunks.

Cone-shaped could be crayfish too; my sil had them in her front yard in TX; she did live on a bayou, though.

Sad... I actually looked at pictures of the holes crayfish make... these are not those...
My yard is complete sand. Who needs the beach... you can just build sand castles in my yard.
You'd feel right at home here Sad...

Could they be holes from snakes?

are the holes maybe the size of a half dollar..sometimes a little smaller...in really fine dirt??? In usually shaded areas under trees or bushes????
If so...they may be ant lions.....kids call 'em "doodle bugs". an ant will "fall" into the hole - cant climb out, just slides to the bottom of the cone shaped crater and the doodle bug "hides" just under the surface of the dirt at the bottom of the cone shaped crater - doodle bug has lunch...
Take a blade of grass, and stick it in the bottom of the hole...the ant lion will sometimes "grab" the grass.....or you can drop an ant into the hole - same results...
We have 'em in this part of Texas... Oh....hope they arent skunks - skunks carry rabies!!

Hmmmmm...i thought you really didnt know what they were... ...
Was this some kinda trick question???
They are doodle bugs (ant lions)!!!!
Every kid here in Texas know what they are....im sure they are in other states as well....
Oh...sometimes you can dribble a small amount of dirt or sand into the hole (not too much)...and the bug will start "flicking" the dirt back out...
