"Don't give up, the beginning is always the hardest." - Deeply Scared's mom

Matilda (Roald Dahl)

Well, I'm in heaven.

My 5.5yo DD saw the movie Matilda this summer, and I told her it was also a book and she asked if we could read it. We've read some light chapter books but haven't quite moved to this many words-v-pictures yet, but I was excited by the idea that she might be ready for longer books that we could explore together.

Sure enough, she loves it. She begged me to read an extra chapter tonight, her eyes all wide staring off into space, toes wiggling... and when I close the book she has a MILLION questions about the plot. "Wait, is Matilda GOOD? But isn't tricking NAUGHTY? Is the movie wrong or the book, because the glued hat has a different story in the book!"

This is seriously something I have been waiting for my whole life. Next up - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, then maybe Harry Potter.

So excited.

How do You pity party?

So I almost posted this in OT because I did have a roughish week, but I want to post pictures and ultimately it would be good if this ended up silly and light hearted. Don't I always steer it to comedy anyway?

So I have today off and I've been throwing myself a full blown one woman pity party. Here is the order of events (after I got DD off to school, of course):

So I should probably follow all that up with a walk, some water, and a salad. It was a hell of a party though.

How do YOU pity party?

So what if Billy Joel DID start the fire?

Etta James actually prefers a Thursday kind of love?

The Rolling Stones decided that the red door would look better in cornflower-blue?

Go!

Book cover that judges you!

I thought this was interesting. I was worried that it was going to judge people by their features, but I think it's just designed to read your expression.

Anywho, quite the... irony? Juxtaposition? The Germans probably have a word for this....

How German sounds compared to other languages

Let me preface this by saying I love Germany, Germans, their beer, their impeccably clean streets... but I'm especially fascinated with their language. Or SPRACHLICH!! if you will.

More Harry Potter!!!

Well, I got snopesd about there being new stories, but there IS more content and updates about the characters on the Pottemore website, and they've made it super fun for Christmas.

The current stuff is McGonagall info prior to Hogwarts, more about the Malfoy family, and a history of Floo powder. (Is it silly that I get all excited for these scraps of new details?)

I've been a Pottermore member for a little while.... I swear I didn't have a choice in the sorting.

Very interesting

Well, this development is interesting. I'm not interesting at all... maybe funny sometimes but that's it.

Somebody is trying desperately to friend me on FB. Over the last month I have received on strange friend request a week. If I think about it, I've gotten a sprinkling of people I don't know through out the years, but I tried to chalk it up to somebody just trying to expand their social circle.

I don't ever add anyone unless I know exactly who they are.

So over the last month, I get these rando's. They always have 1-3 friends in common with me, and they are usually people from the same area, or school, or workplace... but I don't recognize them so I just pass. Today I decided to investigate a little. It's been years since I've been aware of people willfully trying to mess with my shit, so the conspiracy theorist in me was pretty much sleeping.

Well, this is a bogus account. My one friend who friended this person must have done it lazily, or liked the picture they saw.

Obviously in this case it might not be personal, but I went back to the few others that had, like, THREE childhood friends in common with me, or THREE college friends in common with me, and I noticed that those accounts were bogus as well. How could I tell? Because most of their friend list were alcohol or car or porn sales account. Littered across their timelines are messages of, "Hey - thanks for the add! Check out my webcam at sdklfshdf.yuck.gross"

Again, maybe it's not personal, but the hometown? Then the school? My friends list is blocked so they're obv getting this from people with less secure accounts.

I wonder if I have a stalker? Or is FB just getting that crazy that I need to weigh out sharing Vrazz pictures with the world against whatever this nonsense is.

Hmm.

Larp alert

What have I done to my sweet daughter? Honestly, she picked every item out. Nay, demanded it.

Anywho, costume complete. Sword's WAY too big, but she's not giving it back.

Escape The Room

Has anyone done this?

We're being asked to be on a team. I've looked into it a bit - and I'm intrigued.

This would either be super exciting, or I'll end up chained to a table, a saw within reach and some clownfacey thing feeding me instructions.

Thoughts?

Cause Allie Brosh needs her own thread

In honor of not COMPLETELY hijacking the "What are you reading now?" thread, I thought we should take all things Broshish her so we can be ridiculous and not disturb people who want to have a serious (What is?) conversation.

Let's continue the parpy in here.

Anything David Sedaris

I cannot get enough of this guy, lately.

I find that I need to be in the right mood for certain authors, and I tried him years ago and found him brilliant but a little too depressing. No - realistic is a better word. He was too realistic and I found it depressing at the time.

I just finished "Dress Your Family In Corduroy and Denim" and moved onto "Me Talk Pretty One Day." I read "Holidays on Ice" years ago and will do a revisit when I'm done with this one.

I think I get drawn into his writing because he looks at people the same way I do - innocently at first, then cynicism as soon as they open their mouths, but always some kind of affection - even if they're idiots. It's clear that his mother had significant issues, but he has a loving way of painting how erratic and selfish she was.

He makes you laugh and breaks your heart in the same sentence.

The guy at Barnes and Noble said not to read "Squirrel seeks Chipmunk" until I was ready. I think I know what he means...
