What do you watch?

2ManyMigraines posted 10/11/2018 12:00 PM

I don't watch regular tv and we don't have cable. Now that my husband is living out of state for work and the youngest gets to bed at a decent time since she's in school, I find myself with some rare "me" time.

I don't want to spend more $ than necessary, so I'm not going to the movies as much anymore. We have Amazon Prime and so I've been watching Amazon Prime Video on my devices after the littlest is tucked in for the night. I watched the entire first season of Jack Ryan in like 2 weeks. I can't view any more recent JR episodes for free. Last night I watched the first 2 episodes of Forever starring Maya Rudolph. Didn't care much for it, so I'm not continuing with that.

What do you watch? Suggestions would be appreciated, especially any on Amazon Prime Video for free!

We have a Roku box and it handles our Amazon Prime and Netflix for us. And Hulu. It doesn't cost a lot to add Netflix and Hulu, compared to what the cable bill used to be.

I watch a lot of youtube on it as well, which can consume a lot of time.

There are a lot of British shows from the 70's through current days available. I've recently started watching the Hornblower series they did in the 90's. It's on Youtube.

Midsommer Murders, Sherlock, Miss Fischer's Mysteries. We watched the whole Hercule Poirot series when it was available.

That said, I mostly watch old black-and-white movies from the 40's and 50's and early 60's.

What genre do you enjoy?

Prime video has a lot on there for free. We also have Netflix and between the two we don't pay for any extra shows or movies. My favourite show on Prime is Marvelous Mrs Maisel, but it does contain a lot about infidelity so it might not be to you (I don't know where you are at in your healing journey). The same goes for Poldark if you like period dramas. It's kinda corny but I got hooked on it after watching with my mum (initially to humour her but it sucked me in) on a visit home. The new series you have to pay for but I thnk the first few seasons are included with prime.

There's a lot of Agatha Christie adaptations on there if you enjoy traditional murder mysteries.

If you like sci-fi dystopia types I hear really good things about The Man in THe High Castle (Philip K Dick). For something political you could try NewsRoom, which my WH loves but I fell behind on episodes and kind of gave up.

My friend has Hulu and we watched Castle Rock. It's kind of a love-letter to all of Stephen King's work and it is BRILLIANT. Sissy Spacek will break your heart portraying a woman suffering early stages of dementia. Also The Handmaid's Tale if you don't mind something a bit depressing.

Check if Luther is on there. It's a BBC police drama with Idris Elba and it's pretty good too. Kinda gritty and scary in parts (the episode of Spring-heeled jack really frightened me!).

I watch a lot of documentaries on YOutube. anything from Russian history to doomsday preppers. Whatever I stumble across.

I would recommend a one-off expense of getting whatever box (apple tv, rooku etc) your need to stream through your tv. I find watching on a small screen gives me eye strain as you hold it too close. I'm sure someone more tech-minded than me can recommend the best streaming device so you can watch on a tv

I don't have access to prime right now but is The Night Manager included? (we have it on dvd so not sure about streaming) If it is I highly recommend it. Olivia Cole, Hugh Laurie (House), Tom Hiddleston and too many other big names to mention.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Bosch, The Man in the High Castle ( I can't watch, don't do Nazis) Goliath, King Lear, Catastrophe (some infidelity, fyi) Mozart in the Jungle (amazing soundtrack) The Killing....

Since I retired I'm catching up on 35 years of watching little tv.

I'm a huge Trekker. All of the tv series and most of the movies are on Prime.

Have fun!

The CW app or website has latest episodes of their shows for free.

We have Netflix and Roku. We use Roku to watch any prime time shows that we missed. We can also access cable channel apps. We like TLC's Extreme Cheapskates and HGTV's Fixer Upper. We don't have a 4K TV, so the cheaper Roku works just fine.

We are currently watching lots of prime time shows, so we don't have much time for the streaming shows.

How come you don't watch regular TV?

I'd add Longmire and Shetland on Netflix, I think.

Doctor Blake Mysteries (from Australia, Youtube?).

Chef's Table (Netflix)

Turner Classic Movies/Fandor/Tribeca Shortlist/HDnet movies, etc. - movie extra on Sling TV
