Tomorrow, when I wake up, it will be 5 years of sobriety for me. So today is 1,825 days.

It took me 12 years of in-and-out, half-assed efforts (court ordered and/or state board-ordered) to manage to put together a year. 2 outpatient rehab programs failed. 7 different sponsors, each chosen for how dysfunctional and/or unavailable they seemed. 12 years of lies, half measures, and doing everything I could to avoid actually getting sober. When I think of all the energy I expended trying to avoid the work of sobriety, it truly makes me sad and/or bemused.

5 years ago, I was given one last opportunity to recover. I was sent to a tiny little treatment center in the mountains with some women who were tough as nails but kind and good as gold. I was loved, but taught discipline. I was given the tools to make sense of my life and to move on without drugs or alcohol as my crutches.

I am so very grateful tonight. To those of you who are in the program, thanks for my sobriety.

Thank you all so much. It's really almost surreal. There was once a time that I could not fathom going 5 DAYS without a drink or a drug. 5 years?????? Who could have imagined it?

My sponsor gave me her 5 year medallion (she's at 22 or 23 now) and that was seriously cool and made me cry. What a great week.
