Sometimes (read, MOST of the time), kids try to shift responsibility away from themselves. Example of a conversation. Once in "kid" and once in English:
Parent: "Kid, why are you failing so and so class?"
Kid: Well the teacher hates me and whenever we have a substitute, I get the mean ones. They be trippin'.
And now the answer in ENGLISH
Kid: Well, Parent, I screw off in class, throw things, run around the room and walk out. And I don't EVER TURN IN WORK.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

I love this one that I get regularly from my DD 15: Mom, the teacher doesn't teach us anything!
I translate this as: I'm way too busy on my cell phone to pay attention to what the teacher is saying.

You could swap out cell phone with just about anything else... including twiddling my thumbs, hoping for "free time", looking at other people... the list is exhaustive.

Parenthood would be so much easier if teenagers would only listen to the parents...

MY Kid actually says this and then wonders why I start yelling about his smart-assed responses.
