Applying for Grad School is coming up fast, and I need to take my GREs this summer.

Of course, I'm freaking out a little bit. I never took my SATs (I was a high school drop out), so comparisons to them do no good.

I did take the GED exam, after I began college (I did well enough on my college placement test that they excused my having neither a diploma nor a GED), so that I could be eligible for more scholarships.

Other than that, I have no experience with big tests of this nature.

Who's taken them? Any tips on how to prepare? (I cannot afford tutors or extra classes right now, unfortunately).

Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated!

ETA: Does anyone think the $500 for the Kaplan online course is worth it?

Take practice tests.

The more of these things you get behind you, like the ACT, SAT, etc., the more you think of it as just another test. Boring, time consuming, but something you can grind out.

Get a good night's sleep before. No booze.

Eat before the test, but not too much.

I hear there are prep guides, but I didn't use them. I am an experienced test taker, though. Just be sure to space out your prep over several weeks; don't cram.

Make sure you know if there's a penalty for guessing on the multiple choice questions. If there isn't, don't turn in unanswered questions. If there is, you can still guess if you can eliminate obvious wrong answers.

Take care of yourself. There's a great future out there. It won't come to you; you have to go to it.

Thanks for the tips, everybody!
I'm a little bit of a compulsive worrier, so even though grad school is a year away, I'm already freaking out about the admissions process.

I will definitely check out all of the resources that you lovely, wonderful people suggested, thank you for the encouragement!
