So my previous post was of how DS12's bmx bike was stolen right out of our garage Sunday afternoon. Well, just wanted to update:
He found it!! We really thought that thing would show up on craigslist or something somewhere, but lo and behold, Monday after school DS took off searching for it on his skateboard. Barrels into the kitchen like a hurricane 30 minutes later saying "Mom, lets go! I found my bike!!"
It was around the block sitting in someone's driveway.... with a horrible, hulk green spray paint job. He was so angry. So so angry. So we hop in the van and go over there and he hops on the bike and rides away (afraid there would be any kind of disagreement over it) and I knock on the door having no idea what to actually say if it opens!
Well, mom answers and I explain that the bike in the driveway was stolen from my garage the day before. She is surprised and livid. Apparently her son (who she had just been bike riding with on it!) had told her it came from a friend down the road and because of the crappy paint, she didn't think it was a big deal that the friend had let him have it. So his story is that it came from the kid around the corner.... we all go there to discuss this with him next. I want to know who actually took it. Who painted it and cut the brakes... but this kid says, no I didn't give it to him, it was a kid we were hanging with in the neighborhood- a friend of a their other friend's who they didn't know. So apparently- no one wants to fess up and no one knows who this "kid with the cornrows" that "supposedly" gave him the bike actually is but he lives in the adjacent neighborhood.
Well, my son is pissed. He wants someone to pay for this. Police are called but basically, its a bike. Not something worth their time really. They assure us they will investigate and talk to the kids and try to get to the bottom of it. It was technically breaking and entering and my landlord (who is also a good friend) is angry and wants to press charges. At this point I don't really care- I don't want something on some kids record, but yet at the same time- we all know a little something here about consequences and what happens when people don't ever have any!
One good thing though in all this-Ex came over when DS told him the bike was ruined and provided the miracle cure- he brought over brake cleaner! We didn't understand why on earth we needed that when the brake had been cut, but he actually sprayed it on a rag and used it to get that awful paint off without damaging the black underneath! Who knew brake cleaner would remove spray paint! So we all sat in the driveway rubbing away... and DS is getting some new parts and new brakes out of it at least.
I'm just happy it found its way back!
