I think I have a sinus infection.

I've had a cold for well over a week. It progressed to a cough/chest congestion, and for the past few days fairly intense facial pain, headaches, and now my teeth even hurt! I should probably go to the doctor, but DD12 and DS3 have also been sick, so I put them first.

So what are your home remedies for a sinus infection? I've tried warm compresses and OTC meds. I'm pretty tough when it comes to being sick and I have a very high pain tolerance, but this thing is kicking my butt!

No home remedy. Dr & antibiotics will work wonders if it truly is a sinus infection.

I do think sinus infections are way over dx'd and treated - but after having one last year and getting meds, I won't hesitate next time I feel that badly.

OTC meds usually work for me, but when it gets to point that my teeth hurt is when I drag my backside to the Dr for antibiotics.

I'm sorry you're so sick. I hope you feel better soon

For an infection you really need antibiotics. Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks guys. I've been trying to tough it out because I "don't have time to get sick". But I'm seriously considering hitting up Urgent Care (because I really don't have time to get to my doctor's office)

If it lasts more than 10 days you might have an infection.

Go see the doctor and hope you feel better.

If you really think it is a sinus infection, see an ENT before you take antibiotics. When cultured, many sinus infections are fungal in nature and taking an antibiotic would worsen your condition. The ENT can deliver an antifungal nasally. (My ENT told me about the above info).

You can irrigate your nose with a neti pot using distilled water or some of the pump sprays. Nasal gel, tube or spray, will keep the passages moist and help with inflammation. Ice for the face and head pain. I have used oil of oregano (or oreganol) in the past and it worked better than antibiotics, when used in conjunction with probiotics. Oil of oregano is a natural, potent anti-microbial that is being used in antibiotic resistant MRSA infections. It is wonderful!

Most sinus infections are caused by a virus and antibiotics don't work. They were a pretty common treatment for them for a long time but most recent research suggests they are ineffective.
I had an absolute bear of a sinus infection for at least 6 weeks a few winters ago. I did two courses of antibiotics and it did nothing . Anyway.. in desperation I tried this saline nasal gel and it worked wonders. I really think I just needed to get the infection out. Gross.. but it helped. If you can find something similar you can get it OTC. It won't hurt.
I would still suggest you see a DR. but antibiotics aren't always helpful with this.

For pain and congestion: Advil Sinus Allergy & Congestion Relief
To reduce the mucus: Mucinex
To clean out the gunk: neti pot or steam (stand over a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes)

But the best bet is a Dr.

Hope you feel better soon!

Last time I had one I lay on the sofa with a hot water bottle on my face. I looked ridiculous but it was the only thing that relieved the pain.

I hope you feel better. Drink lots of warm water, cvs has an allergy med in a green & white box /cvs brand, saline spray, extra strength nasal/sinus pressure nasal spray, and sometimes antibiotics.

Thank you for the suggestions!

I looked for a neti pot, unfortunately they are only sold online, so no help for tonight.

I will send H out to get me some nasal spray. Until then I think I'll take a warm bath and use more hot compresses. Tomorrow the doctor for sure!

I get terrible sinus pain and lots of sinus infections. I do a few things - I take the strong medication (pseudoephedrine, buy it behind the counter), advil and tylenol, hot showers and other steam, netty pot, sinus massage, and exercise (helps to clear it out - I've gone feeling terrible and been surprised at the relief it brought).

Also, put rice i a sock and then throw it in the microwave for about 15 seconds (not too hot) and then rub it on your face.

Generally antibiotics can help clear it up but I dont get them unless I can't get relief.

Neti pot and ice/ gel masks. Heat feels good but actually makes the swelling worse. Cold constricts. Blood vessels and the inflamed passages. Allowing the snot and nasties to drain.

Meta is right that they are way over treated and often the pain and pressure is left over swelling from fighting the cold. Often you don't feel great and are under hydrated. So make sure you are drinking lots and lots and lots of water. Chew areing mentholated gum. Use an anti inflammatory like Motrin or aleve and cold packs to your face. Suck on ice. All reduces tissue swelling and opens stuff uP.

Feel better.

Neti pot! I cannot recommend them enough. I'm guessing you aren't in the states if you can only find them online as pretty much all drug stores carry them. In Australia allot of health or yoga stores have them.

Births - I did try to take a hot shower last night, but I made the mistake of letting DD12 take a shower first, so it wasn't a hot shower...more like lukewarm for 5 minutes, then freezing cold.

Tn - thank you for the suggestions for cold packs. I ended up sucking on an ice cube before bed and it helped!

Nolight - I do live in the states, in the suburbs of a major city. But none of the pharmacies in the area carry them in the store.

I'm sitting in the parking lot of my doctor's office waiting for a few minutes before I go in for my 10 am appointment. Hopefully they will be able to help me out.

I bought my netipot at CVS.

Afrin nasal spray is what really works for me. It clears things up effectively enough to let my body heal itself/antibiotics to work. It's freaking addictive though.

Yah the bad thing about Afrin is it causes rebound swelling too. So a lot of the time when you feel stuffy it's not from snot clogging things up the tissues being swollen.

If you like Afrin, talk to your Dr about getting something like Nasocort, or Vanase. These will decrease the swelling without the rebound.

Yeah, I know. I use Afrin for 2-3 days max, including weaning off it - but it's enough to give the drugs time to kickstart their thing. I'm actually on a daily dose of Flonase right now (at night) and Allegra D (in the morning) because I'm crazy allergic to the pollution where I'm living (developing nation, coal dust, etc., in the top ten for worst pollution in the world).

I am going on week three of a wicked sinus infection. Doctor deemed it viral and didn't think antibiotics would help.

I have been using Mucinex-D, Aleve and hot towels on my face to get a little relief. The real bad pain comes and goes.
