Topic: Said Goodbye to an Old Friend Today

So I had to say goodbye to my dog (Heidi) this morning.
We (the kids and I) rescued her about 8 years ago.
She was 12-13 years old (old for a Red Tick Coonhound) and was showing her age for quite some time. She also had been in congestive heart failure for a couple of years.
She’d been unsteady on her feet for a while, particularly after getting up in the morning.
Let her out Saturday morning to do her business. A bit later in the morning she tried to climb the stairs to get to where the cats and I were…but she stumbled down the after getting up about 2 stairs. Afterward she went to get in her bed. And there she stayed until this morning.
Come Sunday, she couldn’t stand up. When I tried to help her she couldn’t carry her weight and collapsed. Plus she was breathing heavy, her legs appeared swollen as well as her abdomen. She didn’t eat the last half of Saturday and none on Sunday. She couldn’t even lift her head this morning.
So I called the vet as soon as they opened this morning and they said they would accommodate her whenever we could make it in. I had to carry her in.
As soon as the vet walked in the room he said: "Well….we have two options here. You can take her home to die…or we can do it here."
And so...she went gently off to sleep at about 9am this morning.
Good God…didn’t expect it to be that difficult! I figured I’d get emotional…but not so much as I did. Thankfully....sadcat (SI member) lives down the road from me and agreed to be there with me. Thank you for that, sadcat.
Probably should have done it earlier....but we hold on to hope, don't we?
She was a good dog.
Not a good start to the day....

Aw man... I am so sorry to hear that, Kuwaited. You did the most humane thing you could have done, but it is always so hard to say goodbye.

I'm really sorry the time came, Kuwaited. Poor old girl; I'm sure you made the right decision, painful as it was.

I'm so sorry you had to make such a painful and sad decision...it's never easy. You sent her off with love and dignity, she couldn't have asked for any greater gift from you.

I'm so sorry. That's not too far in the future for me.

I have an older dog who is undergoing treatment for cancer right now. I'll be faced with the same decision as you in the 'not too far off' future. I don't like being 'tasked' with this decision of when it is the 'right' time for my dog to die.
I'm so sorry. You loved her and she loved you.......
