Do you have one on your car?

What are the advantages?

Disadvantages?

Recommend or not?

I have to drive across a bridge that crosses a lake which, unfortunately, is prone to swarms of bugs or a regular basis. I'm wondering if a car bra would help to keep some of these bugs from wrecking my paint job.

XWH had a car bra on his vehicle.
We live in CA and when he removed it several years later, the paint under the bra was good, but the uncovered portion was noticeably lighter.
His car had a tan line.

Too funny SAD!!

Well... I think I'd prefer the tan line to the paint eating bugs...

Oh Sad that brought back a flashback.

Eons ago I owned a 1971 VW Karmann Ghia. Bright yellow with a black vinyl hard top.

I had parked the car in front of my house and when I went to get into it in the morning I found a note on the windshield. Well my first thought was, "Great someone hit my car and left a note."

I walked around the car and saw nothing wrong. So, I read the note: "I have a bra that might fit if you're interested." Of course my first response was "What the hell!"

So I ran into to house and showed my H the note. I was furious and appalled. He laughed and told me they were referring to a bra for the car, not me.

So back to the topic, yes I did have a bra for that car but living in So Cal my car did have a "tan line". Did it protect from the bugs? Sure. But the sun did most of the paint damage, that and the neighbor backing into it.

Is there a time of year when the bugs aren't swarming? If you remove the bra during part of the year or park in covered places, you can minimize the tan lines.

I had one for a car in college and it helped a lot to preserve my paint (from bugs and sand on the roads in winter).

I used to take it off on weekends and wash it down, then put it back on during the week.

A trick some people use in Southeast Texas is to coat the front of the car with wax but don't buff it off. Some people would do that at the start of love bug season and buff it off after the bugs cleared up. I've also heard of coating your car with Vaseline. You might have to apply the Vaseline and clean it off regularly so that the bugs don't build up but it should protect the paint.

I wouldn't recommend it. They scratch the clear coat underneath (or trap dirt that does it) and yeah, if you leave it on forever you might get paint fade.

Keep it waxed, it helps. I have a travel trailer and it's coated with bugs when we return from a trip and cleanup is much easier if I keep it waxed.

I read a tip: place a fabric softener sheet in a spray bottle with water...let it soak for a while. Spray this on the bugs, wipe with another wet softener sheet and they should come right off. Haven't tried it yet, but sounds promising.

I used a bra in the past...I don't recommend either due to scratches/discoloration.

How about something like this:

The bra will damage the paint a lot more than the bug will.

ETA: If you do get one, clean and wax the front of the car that the bra will cover extremely well before installing it. Even if it's tight, they still tend to move around and scratch the paint underneath. A clean, waxed surface will help to a point.
