Oh did I mention that I tend to keep a shotgun by the door, and nothing makes a stranger more cautious than a lab barking, and growling, and foaming at the mouth, and a semicrazed appearing middle aged woman answering the door, with her hand on a shotgun......

I too live in the country, and don't particularly take kindly to strangers showing up, but I also know some folks stop by to buy honey too.

I'm with tushnurse... I don't have a shotgun by the door but I have 240 lbs of dogs throwing themselves on the storm door. I've had girl scouts run crying away (I'm really sorry about that but hey there is a "no soliciting" sign).

I would never buy "meat" from some dude driving in a truck. What? Did he knock over a butcher shop? That just sounds fishy (no meat puns intended).

We have those "men with meat" in my area as well. They have even stopped at the gas station when I was pumping gas trying to get me to buy stuff out of their vehicle.

Like some others mentioned - this is common in certain regions.

However, I have never bought it and have heard very mixed reviews from the locals.

Trust your gut and belly to suppliers you know.

You did the right thing. I have a 110 pound German Shepherd who pretty much hates everyone (but me of course). When sales people show up at the door, I answer holding the monster dog by his collar. They usually don't hang around long enough to tell me what they are selling.

OMG! In a previous job I did field work for a utility company. This meant going out and walking through the woods and roads of some very rural areas. I have run into male and female variations of you Tushnurse. I learned quickly to always keep the company vehicle close, always have a badge displayed, always wear my hardhat with the company logo and ALWAYS announce my name, company, and reason for being in the area prior to walking up to someones house if they are outside. If I had to knock on a door I rang the doorbell then stepped off the porch so they could see me and pointed to my vehicle on the road as I talked I have actually bought some local honey from more than a few people as well.

We have "meat men" here as well... they probably show up once or twice a year. I always tell them I don't have any money and they step off pretty quickly.

It might be legit but it still seems sketchy to me.

I had this happen at my old house. Guy gave me his spiel about the meat, but I told him I don't have the space for all of that meat. Then he says that he will pack it in my freezer for me. No thanks.

You did not order it. He came up to your door unexpected. He tried to enter and you denied that.

You should probably call the police and file a report as to what happened. He likely was trying to scope out your house or worse - look for dogs, a SO/spouse, etc. You need to tell the cops to increase patrols in your neighborhood. NOW.

Edited to add, I have 4 dogs and they go nuts when someone is at the door. 3 are Norwegian Elkhounds, one is a hound mix. One of the Elkies is a large bitch with a big head who is VERY protective of me. If anyone got past the dogs they get my choice of firearms drawn upon them. The closest one I could get to. At least one in every room.

My Collie knows and obeys the command "Quiet". I never use that command when sales people come to the door.

I remember a Bible Thumper coming to the door. My Collie kept barking and barking while I held her collar. He said it's really hard to talk with the dog barking. I said, exactly and closed the door.

It gets better. I found my FB post last night from way back when this happened. Here is the details, I was pumping gas and some guy says:

"Psssst.....Hey lady.....you want some pork on a stick?"

Bahahahahaahaaaa - he was selling pork shish-ka-bobs.

Legit or not, the guy was not acting professional at all and I wouldn't have dealt with him either. He's not going to make a very good living acting like that. Try not to feel bad!
