A bomb exploded in my kitchen.

I don't get it. I can cook anything you ask for....will spend hours making a dinner.

But ask me to bake some desserts for Thanksgiving and it's every man for himself.

So far I have some hockey puck brownies and flat as pancake cookies.

A few breads in the oven now...probably falling as I type.

I really envy those who have baking abilities. I just can't do it.....sigh.

(((karma)))

I can't cook or bake. It's hit or miss every time.

..well. I can only hope all those "Hockey Puck Brownies" end up in the Boston net behind Rusk!!

..sadly, 6 of them were in the Toronto net last night.

..man o man did the Leafs stink last night.

..by the way, cookies are 'supposed to be flat' aren't they??

as for dessert, you can't go wrong with ice cream!!

Please tell me you're in my end of the state. I love baking! My son says "You have to be a crazy person to not like your cookies." My pies are a staple with my family. I could so help you with.

Thanks AN, but I think you are fibbing. I bet you can cook and bake well.

SMY, let me know if you see one of my puck like brownies floating across Bruins ice will ya, I am sure there will be plenty left to play hockey with! I am sorry your boys didn't do so well last night Maybe they are saving up for the play-offs!

SD, I think we are on opposite ends of the state...but I could be mistaken.I don't think Martha Stewart, Betty Crocker or anyone could help my baking, it's a train wreck!!

I make a mean apple pie, but I don't care what it looks like--it's more than edible. I also make a great honey pumpkin pie. That's the extent of my baking ability.

What I really do well is pour cocktails

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.

My H and DD and I made a killer sangria tonight.

My plan is to get everyone drunk enough they don't notice the baking snafus!

Ahhhh, the magic of alcohol!

It isn't often I get to brag about this so here goes!!!!

Pumpkin cheesecake with praline sauce

Chocolate hazelnut cheesecake

Chocolate hazelnut cheesecake, as served, with homemade chocolate sauce and leaves, homemade raspberry coulis and homemade spun sugar decoration

Clementine Torte

Homemade cookie tray

A yard of thimble cookies, filled last Christmas by the 4-year-old GD, who did, I think, a passable job!

Rhubarb strawberry mini-galettes

I could help you with, if I were nearby.

The 2013 (31st Annual) *c******* Girls Cookie Making Days are Dec. 14 and 15 this year. There will be people who are just coincidentally (yeah, right) in the neighbourhood and feel the urge to drop in.

I understand.

I can cook. I love to cook, I love making up new recipes. We had guests stay with us for a week, while they were here visiting a lot of family, and they used the excuse of kids bedtime to get out of going out to eat for dinner with everyone so they could come back here and eat.

But baking? No. Cookies are crumbly, pies stay runny, bread never rises, brownies are hard as a rock, and all of the above is probably burned anyway.

Luckily, my husband can bake. All he can cook is mac and cheese. We even each other out.

Uh....lynn, really? I am jealous but I gotta tell ya, they all look awesome!!

Weatherly, yes, that's me. Unfortunately my husband can't bake.

I don't know why it's so hard.

((((karma))))

I'm more of a baker than a cook, but I understand the frustration.

My top tips? Measuring correctly is key, especially with flour. The temperature of ingredients (like eggs and butter) can make a difference. The temp of your oven can be off from what the dial shows. I use a separate baking thermometer that sits on the rack in the oven and go by that temp.

I've got a sister who learned to bake right next to me at mom's side. And it never works for her, either. She knows the number of a great bakery, however.

Wait, NIK...

I am supposed to measure?

ahhhh....

I think I will stick to cooking and do as your sister does and find myself a good bakery.

Hockey puck brownies are a staple in this house. Don't throw them away!!! Put them thru the food processor (grater) and make crumbs. They're tasty on ice cream, in milkshakes. They keep well in a ziplock bag in the freezer.

Breads can be cut into cubes and used as croutons. People will wonder what you've done to make them taste different and special!
