I haven't read the books, but do watch the show.
I feel I would be disappointed by the books now that you have explained that in the books they aren't BFF's and that they aren't so.....girly. That is what I love about the show. The interactions, the BFF's, the girlyness of Maura trying to convert Jane over from her tomboyishness.
However, in general, I find that is true about most books. They are almost always better than any tv show or movie. BW (me) 50ish FWH 50ish
