I come from a house of christmasy people.

All my family have moved 2 hours away from me so it makes things difficult but this year I am making christmas dinner for everyone.

We are also working with a friend of mine to put together christmas packages for the sailors on her husband's ship that will be in Afganastan this year, just to enusre everyone has a present to open on christmas when they can't be home.

It is also our first year where DS no longer believes in Santa....but we are still going to have fun.

I am a total fool for Christmas. However, my family tradition is no tree up before Dec. 1 and preferably, PREFERABLY on Dec. 24. I am not that purist, so I usually get things finished at least two weeks pre-Christmas.

With the two granddaughters now living nearby, Nana has an excuse to go even more all-out. I don't do much on the outside of the house, but wheeeeee-oooo! I go crazy on the interior. And we bake thousands of fabulous cookies. And the desserts are scrumptious. Usually I had lit candles everywhere. With the rambunctious 3-year-old GD around, I substitute with those fake flickering candles--just till she's old enough to not burn down the house.

Gifts are mostly bought, but not yet wrapped. I have a tradition of buying 3 or 4 of a new tree ornament every year. This year's additions are three gorgeous little nutcrackers.

Bring it on!

I used to LOVE the holidays. I was one of those "decorate every corner" type people.

But in the past few years I have lost my zest for the season. Everything I love to do costs so much and I just don't have the funds to devote to it anymore. I put up a tree and maybe a few little things.

I make sure the grandkids have presents and try to give my adult children some cash.

But the thing I still love doesn't cost anything - I love to turn off all the lights and sit and look at the tree with Christmas music playing and drinking a glass of wine. That's when I let the peace of the season come into my heart.

This is odd because Thanksgiving is my least favorite holiday, but I have a little Thanksgiving village scene:

When my kids were younger, we would make a different set of Christmas ornaments.
My kids are now 20yrs and (almost) 18yrs old. We STILL decorate our tree with the stuffed felt gingerbread men and other ornaments made when they were littles.

Edited to clarify: We made a different set of ornaments every year. It became one of our traditions and the kids had a blast helping me find the various projects.

I have to say I used to love the holidays, and greeted them with sunshine, happiness, cheer, and optimisim. Now I just look at it as 2 months of sheer hell. Buying gifts wrapping gifts, putting up the tree, taking down the tree, cooking at least 3 huge meals for people I don't particularly care for, dealing with work, pluss all of it, and of course making sure the kids get all their papers, and finals studied for, and done.

Just YUCK. Bah Humbug.
I was actually playing with the idea of skipping the tree this year.....

For awhile I didn't care too much about the holidays. But this year, I'm excited. Not sure why, but I'm just going to enjoy it!

It's so awesome to read of all the traditions...old and new that you all do every year

The entire holiday season when I was growing up was positively magical...my parents went to great lengths to make it special. Not just for me and my sister but to anyone that rang the front door bell. Everyone was welcome and everyone felt loved and special

It was a wonderful time in my life and one that I've carried with me every single year. I'm fortunate that MH is as nutty over it as I am...we probably need therapy

Newlease, that is my favorite moment as well. Our kids will often join us and we sit in the dark with just the lights of the tree and talk and tell stories of our Christmases growing up. I have teens and they actively seek out this time with us. I wouldn't give it up for anything in the world.

I love the day we get our tree. We often go up into the mountains and cut our own. It's almost always a pain in the ass, big hike in the snow, freezing cold. But fun! The dogs run crazy and dh and my son bitch and moan while my dd and I hunt for the perfect tree. Once home, I put up the lights while dh preps mussels in white wine for dinner. We decorate together. Then I make something we call snowballs for dessert. Then we sit and talk under the lights. Can't wait.
