I believe I've settled on the dress I'd like to see draco wearing when he loses:

Oh, and now that the black queen is gone:

I know it's Sunday 'n everything, and that's wrong, but I couldn't help myself...

My hat's off to my worthy opponent!
He weakened his position for you - excitement's sake - what a good sport!

I humbly accept your resignation, Ser, and look forward with dawning anticipation, to our rematch.

We are now 1 and 1...publicly.
In truth, it is only the 2nd game I've won...out of what? 6 or 7?
Tiebreaker coming...
as well as dress,
heels,
harmonica...

Oh yeah! Sir JJCT won! Oh yeah!

There must be a rush in folks paying up their bets, 'cuz when I tried to offer to the coffer I kept getting error messages. I'll try again in a bit! I'm a woman of my word!

Annotations....

1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 c6

Normally 2.c4 is the main move to make a strong bid on the center for white. With 2.Nf3, whit delays and waits for Black to show his hand. I was wondering if jj was going to play for the London System (in which case I truly should have played 2...Nf6 3.Bf4 c5 for the advantage), but I played c6 with an eye to the Slav Defense.

3.Bf4 Bg4

White continues with the London System of development (a Slav reversed). 3...Bf5 4.e3 e6 5.Bd3 Bxd3 6.Qxd3 Nf6 offers a fairly symmetrical game with drawish chances for both side, so I went with the more aggressive Bg4, threatening to exchange the (soon to be bad) bishop for a strong knight and pulling over the e-pawn to get a more solid grip on the e4/e5 squares which are where the contest typically revolves around.

4.e3 Nf6 5.Be2 a5!?

White reinforces the d-pawn, temporarily allowing his queen to be pinned through the knight but then released through the modest bishop, while black makes a natural developing move with the knight. 5...a5 was an interesting idea to gain a bit of elbow room on the queenside (instead of the more natural e6). If 6.O-O then 6...b5 stakes a strong claim pulling c3 from white's knight and possibly opening some space for black's dark-squared bishop if c3 is played.

6.Nbd2 Ne4

A good square for white's knight supporting the one on f3 and a potential c4 push. Ne4 was played with an eye for 7.Nxe4 dxe4 with a nice pawn to exert some pressure. The knight on e4 is a hard piece to dislodge otherwise and controls some pressuring squares on white's camp.

7.h3 Bxf3 8.Nxf3 e6

White questions black's bishop. Bishops are typically valued slightly higher than knights when the pawn structure opens up, but the knight on f3 is always a strong one and worth considering trading as it makes the potential c4 push a little more difficult.

9.c3 g5?!

9... Bd6 10.Bxd6 Qxd6 would have been an easy way to set up for strong drawing chances, but I was looking for a fight pushing through on into the kingside as well.

10.Bh2 Bd6 11.Ne5

11.Bd3 Bxh2 12.Rxh2 Nd7 with an eye to castle queenside looks strong for black. Ne5 complicates the plans for black...

11...Nd7 12.f3 Bxe5 13.dxe5 Nc5

Black looks to challenge white's knight, but white finds a nice forcing combination. Note that 12...Nxe5 looses to 13.dxe5 Bc5 14.fxe4

14.Qd4 O-O?

I'm giving this a mistake on my part. Maybe not a technical mistake, but a positional one which ended up costing the game. I should have kept the king centralised, but overlooked white's chances (figuring I could line the rook along the g-file). I think b5 or h5 may have been stronger.

15.h4! gxh4 Bg3

A very strong find by white, prying open the kingside and releasing the bishop. Note, if 16...hxg3 the Queen swings to 17.Qg4+ Kh8 18.Qh5 with mate to follow

16...f5 17.Bxh4 Qb6 18.O-O-O

White already has a winning position - f5 was an attempt to punch back and try to find some counterplay. Qb6 (as white's bishop, protected by the rook, attacks the Queen) eyes to the b-pawn (easily protected by the long castle) hoping to find some counterplay on the queenside.

18...Kf7 19.Qf4 a4 20.Qg5 a3

Looking to walk the King back to the center, white pushed with the Queen to permeate through the weak squares caused by black's agression. Black tries vainly to punch through white's queenside, but there isn't enough to back it up.

21.b4 Nxe5 22.Qxf6+ Kg8

White blocks black's attack. Nxe5 scooped up the free pawn, bringing the knight closer to the action, but leaving the chance for white to make a critical mistake with 22.bxg5 Qb2#. Kg8 is forced by white (Ke8 gets mated with Qe7) which queenforks the King and knight. At this point, the material deficit is too high for any chance for black to win... and white's initiative too strong for black to draw. White had a number of winning combinations to choose from here.

23.Qxe5 f4 24.Be7 Rf5 25.Bxc3 Rxe5 26.Bxb3 fxe3

And it's a simple matter of White trading the pieces off the board and marching to victory.

Well... I can't argue with Bill Murray... after all... it's Bill friggin' Murray!

I'll have the pics to upload in a couple nights (Wife's fighting a cold and going to bed early). The harmonica might take a few more days... they're not that abundant up in Canada

A HUGE THANK YOU to all!
Bettors,
Beer-buyers,
NG, the Gif queen,
& Ser Draco, annotater-man.

At some point down the road, I'm sure we will take up the gauntlet again...
Remember, there can be additional bets for more action;
1st Queen taken, 1st to capture, 1st to check, etc.

What we will change next time, to make it better:
- schedule the bout, probably in increments (agreed to ahead of time), where we tilt from 7-8 Friday, 7-8 Saturday, & 7-8 Sunday (for example),
so people won't be waiting...

Great fun, and a great challenge for a GREAT CAUSE!

Way. To. Go!
