Well, something good came out of yesterday. I received another email about my son from the university. They can do testing on learning disabilities as well as dyslexia. The cost is $500. Not too bad considering my son's pediatrician said it can cost up to $2000. The hard part will be finding that money. My husband doesn't believe there's anything wrong. He didn't even want to look at the paperwork I printed or even discuss it. I don't know how I can ask for that kind of money. Especially since he already has the Xbox One pre-ordered which costs $499. Sigh...

In my response to this email I gave him my phone number in case the Dr. needed to discuss anything in advance and he called me. I just got off the phone with him a few minutes ago. He's very nice and wants to see the information on what the school had to say from their testing when he was in the second grade going into third grade. So I'm going to get that together and drop it off in the mail tomorrow, if not today.

The hardest part was telling my husband. Because he didn't want to hear anything about it before, so I had to word my email carefully, especially since I had to ask for $500. I received the typical response of "I'll see how fast I can pull it together." Which translates to "you won't see that money in a long time, if ever." He said the same thing to me about getting braces.

I replied saying that it has to be fast because he's needed this testing since the first grade and I'm tired of fighting with the schools and being told that he doesn't have it from people who won't read the paperwork I have (husband) and who won't test him (school system).

So I'm slowly getting closer to help my little man.

Sorry if this seemed like a jumbled mess, I'm really excited.

Wish us luck...

Woo Hoo.
Any chance that you can do something on your own to raise the funds? Sell some stuff? Offer services to the university where the testing will occur?
Ask if there are any research studies going on that offer the same testing, so that you don't have to pay for it.

You are doing a good job mom. Hang in there.

Wishing you good luck. I wonder if they would let you do a payment plan.

Thank you. I told him again over the phone that I'm unemployed and he said that he'll review the original testing information and go from there and he did say something about working with the pricing. I'd like to see if insurance can cover part of it or maybe we can bill the school system since they keep saying they don't test for dyslexia

You may also want to contact the department/college at the university that does the testing and see if they have any financial support. It's not a given, but I've worked in higher ed for close to a decade now and there's often funding available for surprising things.

Also ask if the University can have a graduate student test him. They are well supervised in their training and it is a lot cheaper that the Phd's doing it.

Chrysalis --if its only $500 that it IS the students doing it. :) That price is just to pay for the tests themselves and the supervision from the PhD and they are probably losing money at that.

I hope they can work with you to lower it even further SD! And just so you are aware -- dyslexia is a term used to describe a learning disability, so its not that they are testing "as well" but that reading disorders are including in the testing they are doing.

If you have questions PM me. I am one of those PhD students doing this kind of testing.
