Please!

DS has to do the Science Fair because he's in Pre-IB.

I'm looking for a Science Fair project he can do mostly independently that won't cost a ton of money.

No live animals please.

What does he want to do?

I always left it up to the kids.

He's toying with the idea of doing something with plants.

I am so much better with the English stuff...

Grow mold on a grilled cheese sandwich and call it a day.

It's been a long day can you tell?
I think dd did a Reubens Tube in Grade 7. Dh helped with the "on fire" parts . And she couldn't demo it at school but brought it and a laptop and a video of the project. It was cool as heck.

DD10 extracted DNA out of strawberries last year. She one first place. She was in 4th grade then but her mother helped her a lot because it was from her college chemistry class but if your DS does it by himself it might be a good project.

How about algae bioreactors?
These are an extremely relevant topic, as industries are looking to this type of technology for emissions treatment and biofuel potential.
You can build a simple reactor easily enough - a 2 liter bottle, distilled water, sugar, yeast, and some collected algae.
Let him think of some things which may affect the rate of growth - temperature, pH, amount of sugar, lighting, etc.
Weight the amount of algae before and every few days. Make plots of the growth rates against the different factors he comes up with.

7th grade. Hmmm. I think we did a duck one then. Do male or female chicks mature faster.

Of course I was raising 21 ducklings from freshly hatched to ready to fly, so we had access to them. Which I would NOT recommend for anyone to go through ever!!!!!

Biofuels can be a good one. Which waste product makes a better stronger, longer burning, produce more power than others get used veg oil from mcd's, used oil from Jiffy lube, etc.

We did one on compressed products for fire starters and heat produced. That one got second place.

SerJr... I like yours... but where do you get algae?

Meta - I'm not sure I want him playing with fire.

GAHurts - extract DNA? Hmmmmm I'd have to read up on that one.

TushNurse... Dear God no ducklings! But the biofuels sounds doable.

Any nearby water should have some - like a pond, marsh, creek, etc.

I guess Schrödinger's cat is not an option then?

DS#1 did a project on erosion around that age. Super cheap as the materials were all we could find around our house. The effects of erosion on different types of soil, landscapes with and without plants etc... it was actually kinda fun! Might be a bit simple for his level, but it's a thought.

We did something similar, except we used yeast.

I went to a middle school science fair and my favorites were...

Which part of your body has the most bacteria? swab multiple body parts on petri dish and grow away

Which house part/doorknob has the most bacteria?

Which combination (%) of newspaper and lettuce makes the best compost (measure daily temps but need warm house. I did this last year w my daughter and our house in Feb was too cold for it to work well).

I wonder where I could find Auger and Petri dishes... Auger, that's the medium you use to grow stuff in, yes?

I'm trying to remember back 25+ years to when I was in HS. I took Microbiology.... but damn I'm getting old.

Since your child is in 7th grade and is pre-IB, you really need to let him do the leg work on this one. He could be talking with the science teachers about possible ideas. He can also google "middle school science fair ideas" -- you can help him identify legit sites, but let him look through them and make a list of projects that he finds interesting.

He can talk through the pros and cons of the various projects (have him figure it out, don't tell him), he can make the supply lists and find out where to get supplies, he can write out the steps he needs to follow. I've run science fairs at the elementary and middle school levels, and even very young kids can do a lot on their own, and should. At the middle school level, you need to take a big step back. You'll be surprised at how well he will do. He will learn a lot more, and will have such a great sense of pride at his accomplishment.

I know you want to help him, but in the long run, stepping back will be the best help you can give him.
