User Topic: Flying w/toddler - ear pressure and pain...

Chewy candy? Check

Gum? (and explicit, moment-to-moment instruction not to swallow) Check.

Shoosh? (Pacifier/Nuk) Reluctantly Checked.

Sippy cups where strong suction is required? Check.

Ibuprofen 30 min before flight? Yes

What the hell else can I do for my sweet girl? She has a terrible time with the change in pressure, and we tried EVERYTHING together last time to no avail. I want to give her some decongestant but I know that it's not for 3 y/o's so I won't... just don't know what else to do for her.

Suggestions?

I always had my little ones yawn often. Also, maybe a warm compress.

Have you asked your pediatrician if they can prescribe something?

DD used to have that problem. One time the flight attendant brought two glasses to her and told her to put them over her ears.

She did okay on that flight. We have done all your ideas too. Those sound good and should work

There uses to be a product called earplanes that claimed to prevent ear pain when flying. I don't know if they are still available, and also if they are small enough for childrens ears.you might try and see if they would do the trick.

Not sure how old she is - can she still suck on a bottle? Fill it with water or juice after you get through security.

I am a grown adult and I still have excruciating pain in my ears on flights. I second the "earplanes" if you can find them small enough for a child. That is the only thing that helps me.

You can order the Earplanes on CVS.com, and they do make them in kid sizes.

We're headed out tomorrow... so maybe I will jaunt over to CVS and see if they have Earplanes.

Gahurts - that is a great idea about the bottle. I'm going to drag one out of storage!

Thanks everyone - I'll letcha know how it goes.

As soon as they close the door and until you reach about 10,000 feet (when you can turn on electronic devices) have the baby/toddler suck on something (like a bottle or straw NOT a sippy cup) older kids should chew gum. Repeat in reverse when they tell you to put the devices away. also dosing with benedryl at the same time as the Advil helps.

If she has any congestion at all, Benadryl before the flight.
