Any suggestions? I go to one dressy event per year and it has really sneaked up on me this year, Oct 4. There's one I liked on the David's Bridal site, but it is still $99. I was able to try on an 8 in store today but it was super tight around my ribs. Could order a 10 online but frankly DB is kind of strict on their return policy and I am not sure I want to pay $100 for a dress that may or may not fit and is pretty but looks cheaply made.

Any suggestions, stylish ladies? Bonus for pics! I am 5'7", short-waisted & long legs. Not big in the chest. I usually wear about a ten. Thank you for any suggestions!

I KNOW it sounds crazy, but Forever 21 actually has AWESOME cocktail dresses. H&M is fun too. If you don't have a local one they still may be able to ship in a week...

Thank you, you are so quick!

I like Forever 21 - I will have to try them. I've tried on some of the dresses in the past, they were just really short on me - they were sundresses though, not cocktail. We don't have an H&M here but I will look online!

Considering I'm short that makes sense - no wonder I gravitate to their stuff!

JCrew has some super cute cocktail dresses. I just got a bridesmaid dress from them and it shipped in 6 days! Check them out.

I would also check out higher end consignment shops. You can get some great deals.

JC Penney has some pretty dresses and you can always scope out the clearance rack at any store.

I know this is a bit random, but when DS got M, I picked out my dress on a bridal site; it was $300. I found the exact dress (even the color) on a rack in Macy's for $106.

Modcloth has cute inexpensive dresses and a great return policy. You can also read through a ton of reviews regarding fit and length.

lost, I remembered the existence of ModCloth after I posted this last night and spent literally HOURS on it last night! Screw sleep!

Have you ordered anything from there? My friend has, but her dresses were mostly for work. Would their stuff be appropriate for a semi-formal event? Some of the dresses I saw were really beautiful but it's kinda hard to tell online!

If you have a Deb store near by we found a very nice homecoming dress for my daughter there and I think we paid 63.

I'm not sure if we have a Deb but I'll look! I wish we had a Macy's. We have a really nice JC Penney near my house. Thank you ladies for the recommendations!!!!!!

I ordered a simple cocktail length sheath from them this summer to wear as a bridesmaid dress. It ended up being a little short for what I needed it for, but I think that is my long legs. I kept it because it was such a nice dress, though. I'm not sure I can answer the semiformal question because I'm fashion illiterate!

Jana-

Mod Cloth has stuff you would wear to work and stuff you would wear to a semi-formal event. When modifying your serach select "special occasion"

WARNING: a lot of the dressed are from european designers and run small. The fact that you are not big up top is a good thing (I am ). Use the reviews. One of the things I love love love about MOdCloth reviews is many post pics as well as sized ordered, height and weight. It really rocks!

Custom dresses...not sure if they will be ready in time, you'll have to look into that.

I love that you can select length, dimensions and for some even sleeves/necklines.

I am not sure about the event but Ann Taylor has nice dresses and on sale are very reasonable.

I bought a dress for a black tie wedding there for $60 originally $300. It fit off the rack and I still wear to more formal weddings.

Have a great time!

Banana has a 35% off sale until tomorrow. Have you tried Loft? They have a few things and while not the best quality, it's well styled and good prices. I often find good stuff at White House Black Market.

Semi formal is great because if you find a basic dress it is easy to dress it up with accessories.

I second the person who said debs. A lot of their stuff is very teenage, but you can find some nice things, fairly cheap.

Jana,
Do you have a TJMax in your area or other "Closeout" type store? I have found some very nice designer dresses WAY under $100.

Yes, I do! I think I'm going to go shopping either tomorrow or at lunch. I like those Deb dresses, but I fear that most of them would be too short.

I second the high end consignment shops. I used to get pretty much all of my clothes from shops like that when I was working in financial services. Ann Taylor, Talbots, Liz Claiborne. All super cute, all super cheap. The best ones were in the nicer areas of town (this was in Plano, TX).

I don't know where you are but do they have a Nordstrom or Nortstrom Rack there? Nordstrom on sale is awesome and the Rack is their outlet store.
