Kelly Clarkson's comment was "Two words #PitchyStripper".

I'm not offended by the slutting it up factor. I get that it causes controversy, sells records, gets ratings. We get the media that we buy. It wouldn't happen unless we, the people, were consuming it.

But. It was terrible signing. Terrible dancing. Not arty. Not expressive. Not complex. Not intriguing.

It was just plain UGLY.

I know understand why the interwebz has invented the phrase "DAFUQ?".

She has to be on some hardcore drugs. None of that seemed rational - I've read things about it being a contrived, controlled spectacle but I don't know - I don't think you can fake that level of unbalanced - not even as a marketing ploy. It doesn't feel like a sell out - it feels like a break down.

Lada Gaga (who I do love) came across like some kind of Dalai Lama by comparison.

I may have reached a point where I'd piss on him if he was on fire.... eventually!!

Also, the song, while still degrading women, does not promote rape.

I respectfully disagree. The song encourages men to disregards a woman's "no" to mean he should keep trying.

But the real point is, he and the song are as equally disgusting as her performance, but she - the woman - is getting all the hate and he is getting a pass.

This is a really good article about the difference between what Miley did and what others, specifically Madonna have done in the past at the VMA's.

Good article DS - I know some people think that if you didn't like her performance you are "old, prudish, etc." but as the article and so many others here have pointed out - it wasn't even performed well - where was the "talent" in what she did? Even my 17 DD was like "yuck". And don't get me started on that tongue - totally yuck for me - she just looks stupid. I could do without ever having to see her again and will do my best to avoid having to.

Slut-shaming. When guys go to clubs and pick up a girl for a ONS they are back-slapped and told they have *game*, when a women does the same thing she is a whore/slut/trashy.

It's societies "boys will be boys" and girls should be "prim and proper". Which makes no sense, because then who are these men with *game* supposed to be having sex with?

I'm not laughing at her for looking like a slut. I'm laughing at her for looking like a fool.

Yeah, I don’t see this as slut shaming; the male equivalent to that performance would be a guy going to a party, naked save for a tube sock on his wang, doing the floppy wiener dance all night. Eye rape. Vulgar, desperate, gross, certainly not sexy.

His song is the verbal equivalent of her actions on stage. When Madonna first came on the scene she was also slut-shamed, she is *now* an artist, but back in the day she was not so well received or spoken of.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but honestly I don't see what all the hype is about. I get that she was a child star and to see her on stage doing those type of moves would be upsetting to the younger audience who were fans of Hanna Montana.

I think that's the hard part of being a child star is that when you grow up, you can never do anything "adult" because you will be torn down.

Yes, she has issues with drugs and doesn't look healthy anymore.

But I did not see anything that so bad with her performance because that song is basically talking about sex and she performed her part.

As I said I know I'm in the minority here, but its just my opinion.

I dont see it as slut shaming either. It was just freaking bad!!! She cant dance, it looked really awkward and just plan horrible. Dancing isnt everyone'e forte.
Fantasia was on stage with Jamie Foxx at the BET awards in 2006. But she sang with him, had WAY more finesse, and actually ended it by kissing him.

Miley just looked a hot mess...it didnt even really fit the song. She looked like the drunk friend at the party. The one where her girls cover their faces in horror and say "dammit, I knew we shouldnt have let her have that last drink..."

I agree. The performance in and of itself wasn't well done or high quality choreography, but when pitted against the words of the song, she was *playing her part*.

She could have had moves that were sexier and not so bizarre, but that goes to talent not the quality of who she is as a person.

It doesn't feel like a sell out - it feels like a break down.

^^this^^

In my first response on this thread, I said she must have taken a page out of the Britney Spears handbook. I think she IS so lost trying to portray her "adult" persona, that she's gone waaaaaaayyy overboard. And her drug use is apparent. I agree 110% that this foreshadows a breakdown, not slut behavior for the sake of show.

As for the song, I said it before and I'll say it again: I happen to love it! I saw an interview with Robin Thicke when it first came out, and he said the song was meant to be a funny take on a bunch of older guys hitting on a younger hot chick. That's why you see TI doing the Fred Sanford bit in the video. And, Pharrel doing the "hey girl, come on over here" is a take on the older guys ogling hot girls like when they walk past a construction site. It was meant to be a fun, up-tempo song for the summer.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I don't see the rape-force sex part in this at all. Just my $.02. I don't want to start a debate about the song; this thread is about Miley's outrageous performance, I think.

There is a simple, and horrible, message here for young girls.

You can be wholesome and *good* when you're young but you really should consider looking and acting like a ho when you're 20.

It not so much about what Cyrus does, it's the mixed message for younger girls.
