Just got back last night from band camp with my DH and my girls. We had a great week with all the kids. While there the band director decided we needed 2 drum majors and he named my oldest dd as one. I am so proud of her! Also, she and one of the other seniors took it upon themselves to uphold the traditions of our band camp . One of those is senior buddies for the freshmen, kind of a secret santa thing. All of the seniors are suppose to do this but my dd and her friend were the only ones willing this year. They used their own money and purchased little gifts to give all the freshmen every night. Also using their own money (they bought them before camp and usually the parents go pick up the stuff the first night of camp) they purchased t-shirts and paints to make all the freshmen shirts. The seniors usually spend their free time during the week making shirts for the freshmen in their section. No one wanted to do it so my dd and her friend spent every free min of their time and usually until 12:30-1am working on shirts for all the freshmen. They then woke the entire band up very early on Friday morning and made them line up in parade formation and stand at attention while they went through and laid the shirt across their shoulder. Then they instructed them to wear the shirt all day. They are usually kind of funny shirts and the kids keep them and bring them back to band camp every year. My DH and I were so impressed with the leadership that my dd and her friend showed during the week that we presented them with "amazing senior" awards Thursday night. We all cried like babies.

My younger dd did awesome all week also! She loves playing her snare! She never complained once about how heavy it was for her. The drum with the carrier is about 40 pounds and she weighs about 120...so that's a lot of weight on her shoulders and back. She also learned all the music and steps with no problem.

Anyway, just wanted to brag a little. I'm just so proud of them!!!! Well, I am off to buy a drum majors mace!

Thanks everyone! She is a pretty amazing person! I find it funny that in 8th grade I had to bribe her to do band in high school. She had been in band since 5th grade and was tired of it. Now, she loves it and will be in the band at Marshall University next year.

Tushnurse, what does your son play? My dd was section leader her sophmore and jr years. Now she is assistant drum major. Good luck to your son!!!!!
Freshman band week is the first week of summer vacation and most of the upperclassmen go to that. Then summer band starts here on July 1st, 8am until 3pm 5 days a week, and band camp for a week 6:30am til 10:30-11pm every day. Basically these kids get about 2 weeks of summer vacation every year. It really gets me when people say that marching band isn't a sport, these kids work hard! They give up a lot. I applaud any teenager who is willing to do this.
