Well I had to bite the bullet and do it. DS is 12 and so far has shown no indication that he doesn't believe in Santa, tooth fairy, easter bunny..you name it .

I was so paranoid that he was going to go to grade 7 next year and still believe in all of this and get teased, but at the same time I didn't want to ruin it for him.

I was literally paniced over how to deal to deal with it. Anyway opportunity presented itself yesterday when his tooth came out. He said..."so how much do i get for this tooth" Ah ha I think, Perfect! So I asked if him he knew that there really isn't a tooth fairy.. and he says "yeah I know, I kinda suspected when you asked what other kids get." (okay sometimes I am less than subtle..lol).
The I ask if there are any other things he wanted to know about or no longer thought was real. He replied all of them.

So there we go, I no longer have to sneak around hiding money or eggs, or presents.......which is kinda of sad...end of an era, my baby is growing up.

But it also means that my DS is an excellent liar because I was sure he still believed. I guess now I should worry, here come the teenage years.

My DD14 is a true believer. Her brother, countless classmates, and other friends and family have tried to tell her for years that there's no Santa. She always replies that she feels sorry for them that they don't believe. She's hardcore.

I had to kill Santa when the kids both were in first and second grades. They were literally getting into fights at school over it. Now mind you we did an awesome job making it very real. But I didn't want them to end up in the prinicpals office over it, or to be made fun of. My kids go to school with some rather poor kids, and I am sure many of them don't get much of anything during the holidays.
We always told them that Santa lives in each of us, and that they too can be Santa. It's actually kinda cute around the hoidays they hide gifts for family members, and label them from Santa. They get it. I know now that they will do the same for their kids someday FAAAARRRRRR down the road.

Birdie Sue found out when she was 9. Her BFF was a boy in our neighborhood and he was over one day, talking about his three younger sisters and how he was having fun with his parents devising a Santa scenario for the holiday season. Birdie Sue's face froze. She turned slowly to look at me and said, "Mom?" BFF clapped his hands over his face and said, "Oh, no. Oh, no. Birdie, I'm so sorry. Mama T (me), I'm SO SORRY!" I busted out laughing and he went to hug her. It was the absolute sweetest thing I've ever seen.

I thought that took care of things, until the next spring. Birdie Sue and I were in the car, on our way to pick her siblings up from school. I was giving her a rundown of what was happening that weekend, and ended it with, "... and then you can come help me shop for Easter baskets for everybody."

I glanced in the rearview mirror and she had the same shocked look on her face. "Are any of them real?" she asked.

Ugh. Not my finest moment. I busted out laughing again.

She's either a hell of a good actress or she made it to 9 before losing Santa and 10 before losing the rest of them.

p.s. At 12, she's now the best SantaBunnyFairy you've ever seen, much more creative than I ever was. Her BFF moved from the neighborhood and has a NEW sibling on the way. Now and again I intercept an email from one of the two, and there'll be a mention of "the time BFF ripped Santa's mask off" and "how Mom killed the Easter Bunny," etc. She's really into YA horror books (Daryn Shane? I think that's the author's name) and I'm so tempted to create a series of creepy letters from the SantaBunnyFairy crew to her saying things like, "We're back. And we're pissed."

I had to break it to DS when he was 10. He was Mr. Christmas pretty much from the time he was born. I,too, didn't want him to be teased, and we were sending him to Space Camp for his Christmas present. He had to fly out on Christmas morning, so we were opening presents on Christmas Eve instead of the usual Christmas morning.

He was ready; everything was OK

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.

My kids (now almost 35 and 36)refer to Santa/Easter bunny/ tooth fairy as "the times Mom lied to us."

Seeing my brothers told me Santa was killed in a helicopter crash on his way to Gimbel's, I tried to be gentle with our kids.

Turns out they knew anyway and were all just waiting for us to spill the beans. They all still got a healthy pack of Santa presents anyway, (AJ still does) so it all worked out.

nowiknow, that is DD10 in my house. She feels sorry for all non-believers and cannot be swayed by well-meaning friends (and some mean ones too). She also adopted St Nikolaus, a German tradition of filling a boot with candy for good kids or coal for bad kids.

Ever since she saw an older man dressed up as Santa Claus with a huge white beard in a fire-red pick up truck turning at an intersection in our town, waving at her, she just 'knows' he is real

I think my 12 yr old son hasn't believed in any of it for several years. My 8 yr old daughter still believes.

I think my son might be afraid he'll stop getting stuff if he admits to not believing.

I think...therefore, I'm single.

It is what it is.

Santa lives in each of us

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAHhaYDMBKw

I did go through a dark period in my life where I tried not to believe but he was always there inside me waiting for me to understand the truth. I, for one, still know that that bell makes the most beautiful noise.
