I'm 52 - I have not had a period in 2 years. I have been on HRT for about 2 1/2 years.

My Dr. told me to try to stop taking it every so often to see how I'm feeling. I have tried this twice and each time my hot flashes return with a vengeance!

I don't want to be on the hormones any longer than necessary to ease my transition. Will I just have to suffer whenever I stop? Or will it be easier at some point (unknown in the future)?

Thanks for any wisdom you can share.

NL

Everyone is different, so I don't know what you mean by 'with a vengeance'. I've never taken anything; I had flashes--they felt like a blast furnace emanating from my core, but they lasted less than a minute and faded quickly. At the height of the occurrences, they happened maybe 10 times a day; I never woke up in a 'puddle' as some people describe, and they never woke me up a night, but I only get about 5 hours of sleep a night, so not much wakes me They have faded to perhaps one or two a day now. I've completely lost track, but they probably started in 2005 and the worst was probably over in 5-6 years, but those were the years of the infidelity/divorce, so stress was probably a factor. Who knows.

Do you think you could tolerate them in any way, shape or form? Could you dress in layers to accommodate cool down when necessary? Do you need the hormones for any other reason like osteoporosis?

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.

Perhaps if you fade the HRT out gradually, rather than go cold turkey, the transition might be easier?

I've never taken anything for this. My hot flashes are pretty much done with, occasionally get heat bombs (all over, long lasting). The night sweats are done. The moods are evening out. I just dress in layers, sleep with a fan, make sure I have papers in my purse I can use as a fan if necessary.

You could try seeing an acupuncturist who is skilled w Chinese herbs or a naturopath, these health professionals are good at suggesting herbs and nutrients that relieve hot flashes so you can slowly ease off the hormones.

I'm 52 and whenever I get too many hot flashes I do a gentle liver detox and the flashes disappear for months.
