WARNING - I'm only on page 105. I've already gotten a lot of spoilers from what little bit of the show I've seen, and from Facebook - so please tread lightly, I beg!

I wanted to buy the first book (rather than the boxed set) so I could see how I liked it before committing to the whole series - well, I was up until 2:00 am reading. It's really good so far - what do you think? Does it keep getting better?

I loved this series of books.
I have two main complaints though. First, the author takes forever to write each one (so take your time reading them because the next one will be a long time coming).
My second complaint is that the further in the series you go, the list of characters starts to grow exponentially...and while this can be good if they are important to the main plot line(s), it doesnt always feel that these are key players.

So what you're saying is I probably should start taking notes now?

So - the books that are already written do not complete the series? It's still in progress?? I didn't realize that.

Yep, it is still in progress.
Don't get me wrong...it is a fantastic series, but you need a lot of patience with the last couple of books (and the author's perfectionism/slow writing).

I loved the first few books a lot, but then they started to get overly complicated and overly populated for me...keeping in mind that reading with a toddler around can be hard and postpartum my ADD has been difficult to manage. So yes! Start taking notes now and enjoy the ride! I think there are two more books planned to finish the series.

I absolutely LOVE the books and cannot wait for the rest of the series!

But yes, I agree with others, the cast of characters grows (although many do die). Honestly, I started making up nicknames for them so I could keep them all straight!

Maybe by the time I finish the books that are already written, the last two will be finished. I doubt it because I become a slave to my book when I'm enjoying it, but I can hope!

Does the HBO series follow the book closely? From the little I've watched (I decided early on that the show was so good that I couldn't let myself watch it until I read the series) it seems like it does.

The HBO series does follow the books pretty closely, the author, Martin, is very involved with the production and writing of the show. However you get a lot more detail and I think a lot more emotionally attached in the books.

For some reason, I resisted reading the books and only watched the series. I changed my mind after watching the second last episode of this last season. I've just begun the first book.
I won't mention the scene name, but holy hell, it was awesome.

I'm sure you're talking about the red wedding. Facebook already ruined that one for me.

I am obsessed with the series and the books Book 4 took me forever... it is seriously long and easily the most boring book of the series, but it is worth it. I liked 3 the best.

I watched the first season and then read the books before season 2 started, and honestly... watching the show kind of helped me keep track of people better when things got clunky in the books (which starts to happen at around book 3). Even in books 4 & 5 (where the series hasn't caught up), it somehow helped even though a lot of characters haven't appeared in the series yet.

I've never been into the fantasy genre before until Game of Thrones, and I have been searching and searching for something similar to it that isn't all cheesy and magic-heavy.

I love this series of books and can't wait until it's finished.

The TV series is a good adaptation of the book and the actor who plays Tyrion is perfect!! He has become my favorite character.

Martin has done a good job with the characters and most are not all good or all bad, but complex.

OK, on A Feast for Crows now!

Where can I catch up on the series? It's not on Netflix and it looks like HBO just has the previous season on demand?
