My ex had made arrangements to spend the weekend with the kids b/c of Father's Day and a family party. Well he called me this morning in a panic - I could tell he was crying - and asked me to come and pick up the boys, wouldn't tell me anything just asked me to come. (Drama QUEEN) So I jump in my car still in my pj's and drive down to his mothers house and find out that there has been a giant "kerfuffle" with his siblings that involving a fist fight and property damage. The police were called to break things up and charges were being laid. None of the kids were involved or hurt but they and their cousins witnessed everything.

Ex was very emotional and wanted to talk to me before I left, he said he'd never lost it like that before and he was so sorry and he didn't know how to fix it. I asked him if he'd hurt anyone physically, if any of the damage I saw outside the house was from him, or if he was charged with anything and he said no.

I laughed at him. I couldn't help myself. I told him he most definitely had done worse, reminded him of a few of his more epic tantrums, hugged him, told him I was still talking to him and he could fix things if he wanted to. It was nice to see him feeling bad about something.

I'm always glad I finally saw the light and got a divorce, but sometimes I'm so very grateful for my life now I could just cry with relief. This is one of those times. The kids get to come home with me and be safe. I don't have to help fix things with that family b/c divorce means I don't have to be related to them anymore.

How did this become our lives?

^^^^^^^This is something I have thought of a LOT lately, Williesmom.

So glad you were there with a sane, safe place for them to get away from that, Runningaway. Happy Father's Day, indeed!

Love the topic title. How true it is.

Good lord. I am very sorry your kids have to be related to them. I hope they and their cousins are OK. Nobody needs to see this crap, let alone kids.

I may have reached a point where I'd piss on him if he was on fire.... eventually!!

The kids are ok now, they were very happy to be home. I brought one of their cousins back to my house when I picked up my kids, I felt bad for the younger ones that had to stay with their parents.

I made the mistake of saying to my oldest boy that their dad "makes his own trouble" later that night when we were talking about what happened which in hindsight was pretty cruel and he said to me "mom be nice, dad had a really bad day today" so I feel bad about that, I don't want to make the boys feel like they have to defend him. That's a slippery slope. Unfortunately it's not the first time they've seen the adults on that side of the family behave that way.

My kids are old enough to be embarrassed by this so hopefully it just teaches a lesson.

A very sad lesson.
