User Topic: A Dance with Dragons Spoiler request

In a stunning turn of events, a Google search for "dance with dragons who dies" returns nothing obviously useful. Bad, bad internets. Unless of course the spoiler is that no one dies, which would be hilarious.

I do not have time to read this book. Or re-read the others to remember what the hell is going on. I cannot admit this on sites where it would be on topic, due to having a rep to protect but not having strong enough feelings about the property to take any particular position against it.

So could someone here please just tell me who dies, anything to do with Jaime and Brienne, and anything to do with Tyrion or Arya?

Thank you in advance for not judging me.

There's an announcement on ASIAF that covers the accidental pre-sale. The publishers basically threatened live dismemberment to anyone who shared spoilers. I've looked and looked for any site willing to break the moratorium but I haven't had any luck either.

Jesus. I thought I was the only person in the world who wasn't going to re-read the series just to understand Dance with Dragons.

In fact, I read Game of Thrones about three years ago, started on the next one, then discovered Martin's penchant for not seeming to be able to actually sit down and write on any reasonable timeline.

So I stopped. I am not committing myself to a fantasy story that I'm going to have to re-read every five years when a new novel comes out. I will read your series once. If I adore it, I will likely read it again. I am *not* reading it over and over because you've got better things to do than write. When I give you my money, we have entered into a contract whereby I will continue to give me money, and you will give me words.

Martin broke that contract, so I'm not reading him until the whole series is done. Until then, the books will sit on my bookshelf gathering dust. (And yes, I pre-ordered Dance with Dragons so it can sit on my shelf for the next 14 years.)

This is my relationship with Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time series. In fact, I'm still in such a snit that I couldn't even be bothered to buy the last one, written by Sanderson after Jordan's death.

But George RR Martin? Oh baby, I'm his. Any time he wants me to pick up a book or five and read/re-read, I'll do it happily. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a fantasy series more.

I've pre-ordered Dance With Dragons. I'm almost finished with the last of KJ Parker's The Proof House. I'll be moving directly back to Storm of Swords and reading up through Dance With Dragons.

The casting of Christie for Brienne is great! But what role is Dormer going to play? Margaery? It still bothers the heck out of me that she was cast as Anne Boleyn in "The Tudors." Anne was a brown-eyed horseface. Natalie Dormer is neither. Grr.

anything to do with Jaime and Brienne

Didn't Brienne die at the end of Book 4? I mean, a lot of times Martin doesn't actually come out and explicitly say someone died (I keep waiting for Syrio Forel or the Hound to turn up somewhere. Forel's death was only implied, and the Hound's was hearsay), but it sure seems like the resurrected Catelyn hanged her.

I'm still pissed off at Stephen R. Donaldson because I finally decided to start the third Thomas Covenant series this year assuming that the final book would be out by Christmas.

But apparently it's 2014.

And the new series is absolute dreck. It's all the horrible excesses to which Donaldson is prone thrown into one story...and since the last one won't be out until 2014, that means I'm going to have to wade through the tub of shit all over again. I feel betrayed.

For the record, I've never watched Lost for the same reason. I figured I'd just catch it on DVD when Abrams was all done with it. I still intend to get around to it someday.

Hells, I didn't even read Harry Potter until Deathly Hallows was in the bookstore.

That's the thing -- I did not read it! That's what I'm saying! If so, apparently the minion in charge of updating me on Braime news failed at their task.
I keep waiting for Syrio Forel or the Hound to turn up somewhere.
I don't even know who Syrio Forel is. Just tell me the Hound never ended up at Inspiration Point with Sansa. Stop creeping on the sixth grader, GRRM. Yes, GRRM.
This is my relationship with Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time series.
There's a thing that happens when you break up with an author. Or auteur. Anyone who has engaged in this contract with you, to deliver this long form narrative...when they fail, it feels like betrayal. You can almost look at infidelity as a failure on the WS's part to deliver in the long form narrative that is a marriage.

Jordan and I really broke up after "Kneel before the Dragon Reborn, or you will be knelt." That's the last time he got me off. Crowning moment of awesome. I came back around a bit to see if maybe he could get me off again, or if he'd kill Faile or if Team Egwene would ever stop fucking. camping. Tar Valon. He even made me sick of Mat. Did I ask for more Mat? I didn't mean it, *please stop*.

lord_v and I were talking the other day about this. He is an Absolute Compleatist. He will play every scenario in any video game through as many different ways as the designers can make it. He will read Sanderson's WoT efforts. He watched *all 10 seasons of Smallville*.

I used to be a Compleatist but part of my Saturn return, I think, has been to let go of that. I don't even consider not using cheat codes, because what I like in a video game is loot, loot, loot. Well, and making up characters, if it's that sort of game. And now, for the first time on the internets, I will confess my darkest fannish secret:

I never watched the penultimate episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I've never seen an episode of "Buffy." And this?

He watched *all 10 seasons of Smallville*.

I don't even know what to say. I watched 1.5 episode and had to get drunk to do it.

I'm somewhere between your typical ADHD reader and your balls-out, live & breathe the book reader. If I truly love the author, I'm hopeful that every book will reveal to me some redeeming quality -- perhaps a pretty bit of prose, or a hook, or plot twist, or even just a new and intriguing character.

That's the only reason I'm trying to work my way through Parker's The Proof House. I adore KJ Parker. The Folding Knife was one of those pieces of literature that moved me, entertained me, made me dream and made me remember. The Company was great theater. The Engineer Trilogy was a marvel of storytelling and character development.

This series, the Fencer series, is going to melt my brain. I loved the first book in the series. The second book was interesting in a class reunion sort of way. This third book is a total cockup. I shall finish it, or perish in the attempt.

I'm using Dance With Dragons as a reward.

I began to hate Mat. In fact, I began to hate everyone, even the damn horses. I think I hated the female characters double-hard, just because they were so poorly written. I read up to the second-to-last book out of stubbornness.

I'm pinning a lot of hope on Martin with Song of Ice & Fire. If he lets me down, I'm going to have to make good on my threat to write a fantasy parody series just to get everything out of my system. A series in which, I might add, I shall make the male characters purely 1-dimensional and wearing tight trousers and make the women fricking brilliant at EVERYTHING. I may even throw in a talking pony, just for shits 'n giggles.

Fantasy as a genre is leaving me angry lately. Martin is my Redeemer.

I lost track of Angel about the time Cordelia got all fat and godly, fwiw. Never had a desire to pick it up again.

And if somebody doesn't stop Joss Whedon from whacking off to his Buffy obsession in comic books soon, I'm going to buy the house next to his one day just so my dogs can pee in his pool.

We get it, Joss. There was a hot grrl-power sex-kitten chick you wanted to bang in high school. You didn't get to. Get over it.

You may, however, keep bringing me Eliza Dushku on my television at every opportunity that presents itself. Thank you.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Here's the thing that happens when you grow up with a father who's a minister: your inculcated with this deep notion that anything you read has to be weighed against the sacred. It can't just tell a story to pass the time, it must contain truth. It has to reveal something about the world, something that matters beyond whether or not Anita Blake gets some strange dick and whose strange dick it's going to be. Everything is compared against the value of a biblical-caliber text.

(This is, of course, straight Phil Sidney Defense of Poesy stuff, you understand. My father would be horrified to know that it was his influence that pushed me into an English major. God knows I've been horrified by the revelation.)

I can't enjoy a book unless I feel like it gives me something of value, something lasting, in return. Not just a story, however memorable, but a unique injection into my pool of knowledge. Something that changes me, touches me, teaches me what I didn't know or might have forgotten about the human experience.

And that's what pisses me off about GRRM. Because I think he can do that. Only he won't. He's a slowsie, a recalcitrant.

And I don't want to have to to read The Book Thief for the fifth time just to feel emotionally alive.

I keep waiting for Syrio Forel or the Hound to turn up somewhere.

The Hound is the gravedigger at the Quiet Isle (the commune in Saltpans). He's given up his identity as the Hound.

Didn't Brienne die at the end of Book 4?

That question isn't really answered in AFFC. The lingering question is does her hanging result in her death or does Catelyn stop it?

I am not committing myself to a fantasy story that I'm going to have to re-read every five years when a new novel comes out.

That is my usual policy, but I succombed to weakness after the first season of Game of Thrones came to a close on HBO. Now I have 10-15 years of penance to pay as I wait for the next 2 novels to come out.

However, Anya and Lucien are currently curing me of this malady.

WHAT??????

Do you know that from an ADOD spoiler, or did I just totally misread AFFC? That guy was saying he buried the Hound - didn't even occur to me that he might be the Hound.
