Novel by Larry Enright. Excellent book! Everyone in my family read it and loved it - from my DD17 to my 86 yr old mom. I have now loaned it to a friend and can't wait to get it back to read it again. The ending is sort of hinted at throughout the book, but still came as a surprise.

ETA: Not infidelity related. Good 'escape book'.

I just went to read what the story line was and it does look good - especially because I have a boy in college. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks Hill - I just downloaded it! I haven't really read a book on my Kindle and I have had it for quite awhile. Most of the books I have downloaded have been more "skimming" type reference books. This will be a good opportunity for me to see how I like really reading on it.

OMG - PiQue - I already finished it. It was not at all what I was expecting from the blurb about it on the Barnes and Noble website. I almost quit it cuz I didn't particularly like the main character but I kept thinking how you said even your mom liked it so I continued. Then I got hooked and had to find out what happened. Like you said - there were hints and I was on the right track but the end was still a surprise. It would make a good movie.

The one thing I noticed in the Kindle version was a few times where I think words were in the wrong order or even the wrong word plus once there was a \ instead of a period. I don't know if that is a Kindle thing or if the paper version has the same errors. Did you notice any?

Sharim, yeah, it does get you hooked. I read the first chapter online and got hooked. When the hard copy arrived (and I finally got it to myself...) I started thinking, "Wow, this guy is a real jerk..." And it turns out he is, and he isn't.

In the hard copy, too, there are typos and a couple grammatical errors. I don't know what's up with that.

I bought this book to read on vacation based on this thread. I will try not to spoil anything but if you are going to read this maybe skip this post.

VERY interesting premise, very poorly written IMO. Early on I was like "WHO EDITED THIS?" for all the errors-apparently it is self published. My copy was actually dated December 13, which would have been like two days AFTER I ordered it from Amazon. This guy is printing to order?

He writes about all the revenge scenarios to DEATH to fill 100 pages. Not needed. Does not develop the character. The grammatical errors had me howling. I quit counting at 40.

The one where Kenyon (a real school, BTW) has 15 THOUSAND students, 100 faculty, (one per 150 students!) and exists in a town that is two blocks long? I had to put it down for a whole day over that. Maybe he meant 15 HUNDRED students.

And the anachronisms! Happy Meals and Chicken Nuggets did not exist in 1972. Wendy's existed but would have NOT yet been in the tiny town he describes. He quotes "A Few Good Men" -in 1972. I could go on and on.

I kept slugging on based on this thread. It was a great twist although I think I guessed it earlier than some and then got impatient waiting to see if I was right.

This book could be edited and be a best seller. Or a great movie. But I don't think I'd suggest it to anyone to read because it was so aggravating for the first 80%.

Oops - sorry that you didn't like it. I thought it was an entertaining read (even with its flaws) especially for $.99 (I've spent a lot more money and time on worse things!).

I finally read this over the weekend, and all I can say is...

That poor author REALLY needs an editor.

But he's not the only one. I am reading another book for Kindle that's not a print book and it's worse, if you can believe that. This author is on the Kindle boards and I'm debating sending him a PM offering to clean up some of the grammar and typos. But he needs more... like more of a plot than an ideology.

Four Years From Home has a plot, and it did keep me riveted, all the mistakes and dislike of the main character notwithstanding. This is the first Kindle book I've read where I felt moved to add a note. About how much I disliked the narrator.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Of course it helps to know you *have* enemies.

wantmore - I think the author has a facebook page or easily googled website. He may appreciate some guidance. Awhile back I thought about doing it based on latebloomers comments but then got wrapped up in other things. I just found the juxtaposition of my total dislike for the main character but wanting to know what happened next interesting. Definitely potential but as we have all noted - serious editing issues.
