I got approved for my first post-bankruptcy credit card. Yay me!

It's only a $300 limit but it's a start.

I've worked hard at rebuilding my credit and my credit score is now in the low 600's. Not great I know, but it's the highest it's been since I filed.

I've been offered cards before this one but they all had annual fees or had crazy interest.

I knew I could wait it out and eventually get an unsecured card with no annual fees. The interest rate is a little crazy but I feel it's the price of bankruptcy. I can work this card to eventually get a higher limit and lower interest rate.

So yay. One more step toward fixing my credit.

The interest rate is a little crazy

If you commit yourself to always paying it off (ie life like you have been living) then the interest could be a billion percent and not affect you.

Also check with your bank regarding a secured credit card. :)

Congrats, that is a huge deal.

I feel like it's the last step in erasing the wreckage of the A.

I had bought a house with him but it was in my name and all "our" credit was in my name.

When I lost the house and filed Bk, I felt so defeated. I felt like he and OW took everything from me and got to skip off into the sunset together with no consequenses.

This is the last step in getting my life back and erasing him from my life.

So, btdt - everything was in my ex's name EXCEPT the phone bill he ran up to $500 and the power bill he never paid - funny, those were in MY name! We filed bk also - had a beautiful 4/2 bath two car garage for what I am paying rent on a 2/2 apartment - ex couldnt manage to work (those ow kept him busy).

It takes time, I STILL cannot get a land-line in my name because of him - they are all shits.

nice job CD!!

how long has it been since you had to file?

Great news CD!

I too had to file BK as part of the divorce and about 4 years ago got one of these secured credit cards. It was pretty rough going for awhile. Had to get my own cell phone on my mom's name, when I had to get a new car I got a higher interest rate and had to pay money down for financing, and had other situations where the BK made things impossible for me.

With due diligence I have made it all the way back. I was able to change my cell phone into my name from my late mom's name and add my daughters to the account plus one of the three credit scoring agencies has my credit rating at 'Excellent' with the other two having me damn close.

My $500 limit secured card is still my only credit card. It's done all I've needed, makes sure that impulses don't get out of hand, and if it's lost/stolen there is only so much damage they can do. I actually recommend having one if you make online/phone purchases even with tremendous credit and other cards.

You are on your way. Keep the charges in a range that you can pay off completely every month and keep your other payments on time and it'll be no time at all!

hexed, it's been 4 years since I filed.

I thought about a secured card but I didn't want to tie up $500 for a year or so until it could become unsecured. So I waited and turned down card offers that came with an annual fee.

I had to buy a used car 3 years ago and went through a finance company, with a high interest rate and still two years until the loan is paid off. That helped my credit a bit since they do report to all three credit agencies.

My mother also put me down as an authorized user on one of her cards. As an authorized user, it also shows on my report.

I plan to use the new card once a month for a bill I would normally pay and take care of the balance right away.

Good for you! Many people think they have to carry a balance on the card in order to get 'credit' for the credit card, but that is just not true. Congratulations!

Oh, cd! That is great you could get a credit card as an authorized user. My mom and dad just tried to get one in their name, with me an authorized user, and they denied because he totally f*cked up my credit I can't even get a cosigner for credit!

I have never ever in my entire life had a problem getting credit, not even when I was 16. There are not enough angry smiley faces on this board for me to show how I feel about that one......
